Irish finish tumultuous season with 11 wins, new head coach

Nate Moller | Friday, May 13, 2022

Between a string of close games and an unexpected late season coaching change, the 2021 Notre Dame football season had its fair share of ups and downs. Despite the obstacles the team faced, however, the Irish still managed to post an 11-2 record and make a New Year’s Six game. Irish survive early nailbiters The

A ‘tale of two halves’: Irish drop 21-point lead to Cowboys, fall 37-35

Mannion McGinley | Sunday, January 2, 2022

The Fiesta Bowl was nothing short of a test for the Irish. It tested a defense, and more specifically a secondary, without Kyle Hamilton. It tested a Chris Tyree-led running back room. It tested Tommy Rees and his unbridled offensive play calling. And it set the tone as the Irish stepped into the Marcus Freeman

Irish chop through Stanford in regular season finale

Jimmy Ward | Sunday, November 28, 2021

On a truly wild day in the college football world, Notre Dame made the trek out to the west coast to cap off their regular season. The shakers and movers of the CFP discussion had Irish eyes watching carefully. Michigan started the day with a statement 42-27 win over Ohio State. As senior placekicker Johnathon

McGinley: The receiving corps has thinned out

Mannion McGinley | Wednesday, November 10, 2021

There’s no good time for a football team to lose one of their most reliable and often hit receivers.  The Irish started with an unbelievable depth at wide receiver that has dwindled in numbers since the start of the season.  Last spring, The Observer acknowledged the wide receiver losses to the NFL in Javon McKinley

Irish defense puts on second-half clinic in 41-13 win over Badgers

Mannion McGinley | Saturday, September 25, 2021

The Irish got off to a slow start Saturday, as the squad stepped out of the tunnel a couple of moments after Leprechaun Pat and the rest of the cheer squad took off with the flag. The momentum progressively picked up, though, as the Irish ran Wisconsin out of Soldier Field in the second half

Irish show both consistency and improvement in home win over Purdue

Emily DeFazio | Sunday, September 19, 2021

The Irish were in for a battle against Purdue from the very beginning of the game on Saturday. The matchup went on to be one filled with statement plays rather than steady progression on either side.  The Irish didn’t have a scoring drive for the entirety of the first quarter. Graduate student quarterback Jack Coan

Geyer: The battle against seasonal affective disorder

Ellen Geyer | Friday, October 23, 2020

My seasonal affective disorder is starting to creep in again. And no, this iteration does not have anything to do with the weather. Brian Kelly, I’m looking at you. My old age has made me soft this year. I’ve been trying my best to look at the season with a brighter perspective than I have

Mannion McGinley | Monday, October 19, 2020

After the 12-7 Irish win over Louisville, wide receivers junior Kevin Austin and graduate student Ben Skowronek topped the target list Saturday for graduate student quarterback Ian Book. The pair each had two targets, with one and two receptions, respectively. These were their first receptions of the season, as they are both coming off injuries.

Jimmy Ward | Monday, September 7, 2020

Last Tuesday Notre Dame football head coach Brian Kelly fielded questions from the press via a Zoom call. Then a little less than two weeks away from the upcoming season opener against Duke, he sounded confident after his squad had gotten some live reps inside of Notre Dame Stadium. He was particularly thrilled about seeing

Position Group Breakdown: Wide Receiver

Observer Sports Staff | Tuesday, April 21, 2020

There are question marks about the Notre Dame wide receiving corps heading into the 2020 season, as the Irish lost most of their top receivers from 2019. The depth chart appears to have plenty of talent, though, so if things play out right, the Irish could be looking at even more success next season. Position

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
