Navy takes momentum from recent win into Notre Dame Stadium

Jimmy Ward | Friday, November 5, 2021

Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo appeared a bit tired as he started his press conference on Monday, fumbling his words and swiping away stray eyelashes as he began to describe his upcoming opponent in Notre Dame. It was hard not to look at the somewhat comical first few moments of the interview as an analogy

Williams rushes for nearly 200 yards in Irish victory over UNC

Nate Moller | Sunday, October 31, 2021

For the second consecutive week, the No. 11-ranked Irish reigned victorious in a night game at Notre Dame Stadium. This time it was against the UNC Tar Heels by a score of 44-34. Although the defense had some issues with tackling and giving up big plays, junior running back Kyren Williams proved to be the

Next man up: DJ Brown stepping up in Hamilton’s absence

Aidan Thomas | Friday, October 29, 2021

Listening to senior safety DJ Brown talk with the press ahead of UNC, one could have easily mistaken the Annapolis, Maryland product as a seasoned starter. It was not obvious that Brown, and his role on this team, have undergone some massive changes in the past week, as All-American junior safety Kyle Hamilton went down

Responding to what’s in front of you: Bo Bauer makes every moment count

Jimmy Ward | Wednesday, October 27, 2021

Heading into Saturday night, almost no one was raving about graduate student linebacker Bo Bauer’s ability to haul down interceptions. But that’s exactly the spot he found himself in just moments after losing his teammate junior safety Kyle Hamilton to a knee injury. Hamilton had just made a tackle as USC crossed into the red

Chryst, Badgers ready for clash with Irish at Soldier Field

Nate Moller | Friday, September 24, 2021

When No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 18 Wisconsin play at Soldier Field on Saturday, everyone will be drawn to the quarterback matchup between Jack Coan and Graham Mertz. Before transferring to Notre Dame this year, Coan led the Badgers to a Rose Bowl berth in 2019. He was likely slated for the starting role

Staff Predictions: Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, September 24, 2021

Colin Capece — Assistant Managing Editor It was refreshing last week to actually be able to breathe in the fourth quarter, as the Irish took control of the game down the stretch against a quality power-five opponent. We saw a more focused and unrelenting Irish offense that kept their foot on the gas when they

Irish show both consistency and improvement in home win over Purdue

Emily DeFazio | Sunday, September 19, 2021

The Irish were in for a battle against Purdue from the very beginning of the game on Saturday. The matchup went on to be one filled with statement plays rather than steady progression on either side.  The Irish didn’t have a scoring drive for the entirety of the first quarter. Graduate student quarterback Jack Coan

Hamilton shines out but returns credit to teammates

Jimmy Ward | Sunday, September 19, 2021

On a day that saw few offensive fireworks, a Notre Dame defense that spent most of the day bending but not breaking deserves a large share of the credit for the Irish win over Purdue. That defense had a vast array of contributors, but junior safety Kyle Hamilton sealed the win for the Irish on

Irish force overtime to seal road win in season opener

Jimmy Ward | Monday, September 6, 2021

A season opener away from home typically produces some nerves for fans of Notre Dame football. These away season openers have — for the past few seasons at least — been characterized by shakiness and inconsistency. The opener at Florida State was no different. Things looked good for the Irish right from the get-go. Graduate student

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
