Lady Gaga’s Chromatica Ball celebrates the battle

Olivia Seymour | Tuesday, August 30, 2022

“Have you ever had to battle for your life?” Chicago’s Wrigley Field, completely sold out and packed with 45,000 concert goers, erupted in passionate cries at Lady Gaga’s posed question. After fighting through the past few grueling years, the pop-star’s highly anticipated Chromatica Ball was nothing short of a smashing celebration of life’s triumphs and

‘House of Gucci’ and the exploitation of the rich

Joyce Fu | Tuesday, December 7, 2021

While researching one of my seasonal faves, “House of Gucci,” I was unpleasantly surprised to find that the Gucci family members (including a number of very-alive descendants and the infamous, directly involved Patrizia Reggiani) upon whom this “biographical” drama was based, had no involvement in this film whatsoever, in both monetary and — perhaps more

Father, son and ‘House of Gucci’

Olivia Seymour | Tuesday, November 30, 2021

Exploding with extravagance and chaos, Ridley Scott’s new film “House of Gucci” uncovers the treacherous and oddly operatic tale of the Gucci family’s downfall, complete with backstabbing betrayal, furious family feuds and spectacular scandal. The movie manages to push aside the red-and-green-striped leather and the golden, billion-dollar trademark to expose the Gucci dynasty as a

Claire Rafford, Mariah Rush, Jake Winningham, Dessi Gomez, Ryan Israel, Aidan O'Malley, Colleen Fischer, Matthew Kellenberg, Maeve Filbin and Charlie Kenney | Monday, December 14, 2020

Scene writers made their lists; they checked them twice. The albums from January were reexamined; the soundtrack to the summer was played in December. Everyone’s votes were tallied and the final ticket of 20 records — those which we most cherished, fell deepest into and held closest to our hearts and ears in 2020 —

Male producers are not the secret sauce in female music

Colleen Fischer | Thursday, October 8, 2020

We need to change how we talk about celebrity male producers in regard to female artists. It’s fun to listen to celebrity male producers like Jack Antonoff and Mark Ronson talk about the creative process behind some of the greatest pop records of the last decade. Mark Ronson’s stories are one of my favorite parts

Commencement 2020: Four years in review

Ryan Israel and Mike Donovan | Friday, May 15, 2020

It’s time to turn the clock back to what, in retrospect, seems like a simpler time: late summer 2016. The class of 2020 first arrived on campus via an “Ultralight Beam,” looking forward to four years of academic and faith “Formation” and dreaming of staying up “All Night” with friends. Not yet “Destroyed by Hippie Powers,”

‘One World: Together at Home’ lineup impresses and provides perfect playlist

Dessi Gomez | Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Lady Gaga has done it again with her latest project, Global Citizen’s “One World: Together At Home” concert in partnership with the United Nations’ World Health Organization. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, this virtual music festival attracted a great lineup and created an even better playlist to continue quarantining to in

It wasn’t until this past weekend that I finally watched the critically acclaimed period-piece film “The Favourite.” After watching it, I instantly thought to myself, “Why didn’t I watch this earlier and how can I keep rewatching it?” The three main actors — Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone and Olivia Colman — all really went for

The Oscars… they happened

Carlos De Loera | Tuesday, February 26, 2019

I would like to start this article by saying that awards shows are self-congratulatory displays of excessiveness and exclusivity. That being said, I am fascinated by these awards shows’ committees’ inability to get it right and the outrage these gaffes inspire. Just look at the list of Best Picture and Album of the Year winners

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
