Irish ready for high-stakes rematch against Maryland in Sweet 16

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, March 24, 2023

Triumph was in the air Sunday afternoon after the final buzzer sounded. Notre Dame had not only just knocked off Mississippi State in a 53-48 nail-biter to reach their second straight Sweet 16, but also chalked up yet another victory at Purcell Pavilion. Winning in South Bend has almost felt like a guarantee ever since

One convincing, one close victory bring Irish to Sweet 16

Andrew McGuinness | Tuesday, March 21, 2023

One year ago, Notre Dame women’s basketball suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Sweet 16. The Irish literally and figuratively threw away their chances at reaching the Elite Eight with a last-second turnover that sealed a 66-63 loss to North Carolina State. It was the type of loss that sits with a team long after

Post: Ivey needed to be near-perfect Sunday to capture ACC. She was.

J.J. Post | Monday, February 27, 2023

Notre Dame women’s basketball was always bound to have an uniquely small rotation this year. That’s what happens when you only carry ten scholarship players. Ivey was well aware of the smaller roster she was constructing, placing an emphasis on quality trumping quantity in her squad. The Irish bench might have been shorter than that

Irish women’s basketball wins fifth straight against Georgia Tech

J.J. Post | Friday, February 24, 2023

On Thursday night, Notre Dame women’s basketball extended their winning streak to five, downing Georgia Tech 76-53.  Coming off a 40-point triumph over Pittsburgh on Sunday, the Irish entered Purcell Pavilion looking to notch another “style points” win against a Yellow Jackets squad currently sitting 14th in the ACC. Perhaps too focused on style, Notre

Irish take on Yellow Jackets in final home game

J.J. Post | Thursday, February 23, 2023

Notre Dame women’s basketball will return to Purcell Pavilion Thursday night following a brief weekend stint on the road in Pittsburgh. The return will come on the back of what was likely the Irish’s best performance of 2023 thus far. After a stretch of several games where it felt as if Notre Dame was struggling

Irish shut down Panthers in second-biggest blowout of the season

Andrew McGuinness | Monday, February 20, 2023

Over the last few weeks, Notre Dame women’s basketball has mostly done what they have all season: win. But ever since graduate student guard Dara Mabrey’s career-ending ACL injury on Jan. 22, they have not quite looked like the same team. Upset losses to North Carolina State and Duke. Nail-biting victories against teams in the

Irish secure victory with fourth quarter defense

J.J. Post | Monday, February 13, 2023

On Sunday afternoon, Notre Dame women’s basketball dispatched Syracuse 73-64 at Purcell Pavillon.  The Irish handled scoring by committee in their best offensive showing since Jan. 22 against Virginia. Four different players reached double digits in the points category. All seven players that registered 10 or more minutes scored at least seven points.  Junior forward

Irish women’s basketball uses strong fourth quarter to take down Pitt

J.J. Post | Friday, February 10, 2023

After a shaky opening three quarters, Notre Dame women’s basketball found their stride in the final frame to down Pittsburgh 69-63 at Purcell Pavillion on Thursday night.  Double-doubles by Olivia Miles and Maddy Westbeld helped lead the way for the Irish. Westbeld had 17 points, and more importantly for the Irish, added 10 rebounds. The

Irish fall to Blue Devils at home, 57-52

J.J. Post | Monday, February 6, 2023

Sunday afternoon Notre Dame women’s basketball fell 57-52 to Duke at Purcell Pavillion. The game was defined by struggles on the offensive end and success on the defensive end for both teams, but it was Duke who got the last say in a tight contest. It was the Irish who set the pace early, entering

Irish comeback falls short in 69-65 loss to Wolfpack

J.J. Post | Monday, January 30, 2023

Sunday afternoon Notre Dame women’s basketball suffered their third loss of the season, falling 69-65 to North Carolina State on the road in Raleigh. The Irish started and ended well, outscoring the Wolfpack in both the first and fourth quarters. But their efforts were undone by poor performances over the middle two periods. Head Coach

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
