Scene Selections: Scene says ‘Sorry!’

Anna Falk, Rose Androwich, Christine Hilario, Andy Ottone, Natalie Allton, Peter Breen and Observer Scene Staff | Wednesday, April 5, 2023

This is the final week of Lent, and — knowing that this is a time for repentance — Scene wants to ask forgiveness for our grave errors. Whether we reviewed something too harshly (or not harshly enough), we want to correct our mistakes and show that we’ve changed our ways.  “An Evening with Silk Sonic”

Death and taxes: Memento mori

Devin Humphreys | Wednesday, March 1, 2023

Back in undergrad, I was one of the founding members of Michigan State University’s Knights of Columbus chapter. While the ceremonials for being inducted into the first three degrees of the Knights were a closely guarded secret at the time of my initiation, they were declassified during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am now able

Life well lived

Joey Jegier | Friday, February 24, 2023

I was visiting a Moreau class last week to talk about my research when the instructor posed a difficult question: What makes life well-lived? I was stumped. So many things make life good and beautiful. Friendship, family, fulfillment. How do they all fit together?  On the spot, I gave two answers. First, I said that

Notre Dame welcomes Lent season with Mardi Gras celebration

Peter Breen | Wednesday, February 22, 2023

A line of students snaked through the South Dining Hall lobby Tuesday evening for the Mardi Gras celebration, featuring an ice sculpture, king cake giveaways, a New Orleans-style brass band, Cajun-style food and invitations to partake more wholly in the spiritual practice of the Lenten season. On Ash Wednesday at Notre Dame, one can attend

A call to psalmody

Devin Humphreys | Tuesday, April 12, 2022

I am a convert to Roman Catholicism. As I write this column, I’m celebrating 10 years since my confirmation (a late confirmation in my diocese, the Diocese of Saginaw, which confirms its cradle Catholics in 2nd grade). My baptism, confirmation and first reception of Holy Communion in 7th grade came two years after our family

Personal responsibility: What’s the point?

Eva Analitis | Friday, April 8, 2022

As a non-Catholic, when I didn’t make a point of abstaining from meat on Fridays in Lent, my Catholic-school friends weren’t too surprised as they devoutly observed a day of discipline once a week. While they filled the seats of Friday fish-fries and reminded one another to steer clear of meals with meat, they figured

Notre Dame’s student government Department of Sustainability teamed up with Campus Dining and Campus Ministry to implement Beef Free ND, an initiative that encourages students to go beef free for Lent.  The initiative was started by senior Alexander Kuptel, the director of the policy subcommittee within the Department of Sustainability. Kuptel, a flexitarian who eats mostly

Let’s keep this Lent a secret

Devin Humphreys | Tuesday, February 22, 2022

Next week sees the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. This means that for 40 days, not counting Sundays, the Church will enter her yearly period of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. So how are we to join our brethren in this observance? The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) lays out the five precepts of

What I’m giving up for Lent

Gabriel Niforatos | Friday, February 19, 2021

This Lent, I’ve decided to give up meat. I could tell you that my body is a temple and that I want to be a healthy, disciplined person or that I oppose inhumane violence against God’s creation. For 40 days, I’m going to sacrifice and eat fish and broccoli from the dining hall, and maybe

Sacrifice

Letter to the Editor | Friday, April 3, 2020

Growing up I thought I knew what sacrifice was. I experienced the sense of accomplishment that comes with giving up your aisle row seat on the plane for an elderly person or saving the last cookie in the box for your sibling. I did not like it, but I was sacrificing my happiness for someone

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
