Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, March 29, 2022

As the Mendoza College of Business marks its centennial anniversary, many both inside and outside of the College question the role the institution plays in both the University and the global community. Does Mendoza indeed “Grow the Good in Business,” or does it encourage profit-mongering individuals who prioritize self-interest at the expense of all conscionable,

The importance of Ukrainian statehood and why it continues to matter

Letter to the Editor | Monday, March 21, 2022

Russia’s brutal, unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has united the free world with the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian state. 20,000 foreign volunteers have joined Ukraine’s Legion of Territorial Defense and funding has poured in for humanitarian assistance and the Ukrainian military. On our campus, thanks to the generosity of the Notre Dame community, the Ukrainian

Suggestions from a neighbor with over 25 years of experience living near student party houses

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, September 22, 2021

I know that college students have always, and will always, want to drink and party. However, that doesn’t mean there is nothing that can be done to make the situation safer for them and more tolerable for us neighbors. The primary focus should be on party houses (i.e. boarding houses) which have been grandfathered in,

Respectfully discussing atheism

Letter to the Editor | Friday, September 3, 2021

Recently, I was browsing through a couple of articles in The Observer when one headline caught my eye: “Why do atheists debate?” I was intrigued, but the more I read, the more I found myself upset with the contents of the article. Andrew Sveda tries to explain the logical inconsistencies in atheism, demonstrate that morals

Dear Members of the Notre Dame Community, Thomas Paprocki and Gerard Bradley argue that Catholics do not have a moral obligation to get vaccinated. Whether or not one agrees, it is important to realize that the leaders of the Catholic Church not only approve of vaccination, they highly recommend it.  Pope Francis has called coronavirus

Being a kid during COVID

Letter to the Editor | Monday, April 26, 2021

Being a kid during COVID is very hard. COVID is like the baddest germs ever! Even if there’s bad, there is still good that comes with it though. COVID has helped us spend more time with our family. Instead of going somewhere we get to play board games or watch movies with our family. We

During the Feb. 16 town hall, hosted by vice president for Student Affairs Erin Hoffmann Harding and vice president for Campus Safety and University Operations Mike Seamon, Ms. Hoffmann Harding declared that “basketball is a no this semester” because it is “indoor, close contact.” I agree that playing basketball — pick-up games and the like — should

Stop hating on Zoom

Letter to the Editor | Monday, February 15, 2021

To my classmates, I first used Zoom for my Business Tech and Analytics course in the fall of 2019. Much of the time in class was spent following the professor’s instructions on working with Excel, and he’d have his computer display projected as a guide for students. Having a visual impairment, I’m unable to clearly

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
