Seven Notre Dame alumni make the Forbes 30 under 30 list

Emma Duffy | Tuesday, January 24, 2023

Every year, Forbes magazine releases their 30 under 30 lists. Within these lists, the 30 most accomplished people in their fields under the age of 30 are highlighted. This year, seven Notre Dame alumni were included.  The alumni  In order to address national housing issues, Colin Devine, a 2016 graduate, co-founded and acts as chief

In defense of Arts and Letters

Eva Analitis | Tuesday, October 5, 2021

We’ve all heard the comments — and probably even made them: “Arts and crafts” along with other taunts meant to deride Notre Dame’s oldest and largest college. We students of the College of Arts and Letters ourselves often indulge in self-deprecating jokes about our seemingly foolish majors that supposedly offer us no job security or

Atwood discusses her work, the value of the humanities

Nicole Caratas | Thursday, October 26, 2017

For author Margaret Atwood, known for novels such as “The Handmaid’s Tale,” stories and story telling are a quintessential part of the human experience. Wednesday, she explained the value of a liberal arts education in the present day. “It’s something that the human race has always done,” she said. “They’ve not always done algebra. … The

Save the philosophy

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, August 22, 2017

At Irish Rover meetings, I sometimes catch a sideways glance when the staff is reminded that I’m a finance major. At business events, I tend to get a raised eyebrow when I mention I’m a theology minor.  Does the business world need its next generation wrestling with thorny moral questions? Aren’t think pieces in college newspapers

Trade school

Cole Feldman | Monday, November 21, 2016

Why does a senior college business student sign a $60,000 loan for one year’s tuition, then the very next year sign a contract of employment for a $60,000 annual salary? I’m a business student at a business school, but I might as well be an employee at a corporation. Our business school is a trade

On liberal arts and helicopter parents

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, November 1, 2016

In my short time here at Notre Dame, it has astounded me how certain people view the issue of choosing a major. I don’t usually care to point out that, for most people, their major will not be the field in which they go into as their profession. But what truly scares me the most

Defending liberal arts education

Elizabeth Hascher | Wednesday, November 18, 2015

About a month ago at a town hall meeting in South Carolina, former Florida governor and presidential candidate Jeb Bush urged universities to consider a shift away from liberal arts education, saying, “When a student shows up, they ought to say, ‘Hey, that psych major deal, that philosophy major thing, that’s great, it’s important to have

Theology requirement: more life changing than infuriating

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, February 12, 2015

When I entered Notre Dame as a freshman, I was pretty clueless. I learned my freshman year that one of the things I was most clueless about was my Catholic faith, which I had learned my whole life through the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program and regular church attendance. My freshman (required) theology class was

Better than art school

Samantha Coughlin | Monday, November 10, 2014

I have yet to write a paper this semester, a suspect statement for someone who has justified her complete lack of a social life with the ultimate excuse: thesis. My coursework this semester consists entirely of “making,” which is both an incredibly freeing and extremely frustrating framework. I’ve oscillated a bit between majors and departments

Snow time like the present

Stephen Raab | Thursday, November 6, 2014

Over this fall break, I found myself with a quiet moment between hectic sessions of “doing nothing” that Christopher Robin would consider excessive. I decided to take the time to read a 1959 essay by British chemist and novelist C. P. Snow titled “The Two Cultures.” Professor Maginn had mentioned the text briefly in my

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.

A glance at the ballot suggests that this year’s candidates all appear to be human and pro-democracy. This observation may seem obvious or nonsensical, but a look back at the history of SBP elections shows that pro-democracy ideals or even personhood are not characteristic of all candidates.
