An open response to an open response to a letter

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, April 20, 2021

I want to thank you for having read my column and having written such a thoughtful response. I am flattered you felt it deserved engagement. Since you clearly put so much consideration into your letter, I thought it only fair I respond. Firstly, I suppose I could have been clearer that I do not mean to

Why liberal prospective students should come to Notre Dame

Clark Bowden | Thursday, April 15, 2021

It is not uncommon for me to get a wide range of feedback from students, faculty and alumni after each of my columns. Of course, I receive the most comments after some of my more controversial takes like the truly outlandish positions of thinking that women should have autonomy over their own bodies, LGTBQ+ people

Susanne Seiler | Wednesday, October 31, 2018

The United States is in a time of great political divide. With the midterm elections around the corner, people are seeking answers and closure. Tuesday, Notre Dame Constitutional Studies and the Center for Social Concerns’ ND Votes hosted a debate titled “A Blue Wave? The 2018 Mid-Term Elections and the Future of American Democracy.” This

An Open Letter to The Associated Press

Mike Donovan | Friday, September 8, 2017

This is a satire. Relax. Listen up America. Brace yourselves. The knowledge bombs are coming. They’ll rain down on the soft, fluffy snowbanks of the mainstream media, #disrupting the liberal status quo and #leveraging a new era of truth in the journalistic swamp. The Associated Press — a sadistic institution bent on wiping American Exceptionalism,

IndiePAC: Protest music in 2017

Mike Donovan | Friday, February 10, 2017

Woodstock, 1969. Enter Country Joe. Joe steps up to the microphone and gazes into the sea of dazed hippies. Time for a spelling lesson. With a mischievous grin, he shouts, “F!”  The audience — over 300,000 strong — follows suit. They repeat this process three more times, eventually spelling out the preeminent Anglo-Saxon expletive. As

Are you proud?

BridgeND | Tuesday, March 15, 2016

Eight-year-old Sofia Yassini, a resident of Dallas and a Muslim-American, has recently spent many sleepless and tear-filled nights checking and rechecking the locks on her doors, convinced that President Trump would soon be sending the military to snatch her away. Her fears are not unwarranted, given Trump’s chilling comments on forcing Muslim citizens to wear special

To fight inequality, first fix elections

BridgeND | Thursday, October 15, 2015

Historically speaking, the United States has always responded more effectively to issues in which a clear enemy was present. During the Cold War it was the communists, during World War II it was the Nazis and the Japanese Empire and in modern times the great national security threat is jihad and groups that sponsor acts of terror, mainly in

Surprise, America: The Pope is still Catholic

Kyle Palmer | Thursday, October 15, 2015

I remember receiving a number of news notifications on my phone back in the summer of 2013, and the consensus among media seemed to suggest that Pope Francis had uprooted the Catholic Church altogether. Now, in reality, he said in response to a question about homosexuality, “Who am I to judge?” Contrary to what pundits

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
