Miller: Is Colorado still ‘living a lie’?

Jake Miller | Friday, September 15, 2023

While I don’t totally understand it, I love the hype around Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes. The Buffaloes have won eight or fewer games in 19 of the past 20 years, with the average coming out to around 4.5 wins per season. Since 2000, no Power Five program has seen less success on the gridiron than

Peters: Why Notre Dame needs to sign an apparel deal with Champion

Ryan Peters | Friday, July 14, 2023

Notre Dame has a chance to elevate its brand after its Under Armour apparel deal ends this year. Message board rumors swirl that Notre Dame might continue with Under Armour. Or maybe, just maybe, Notre Dame might sign with Jordan Brand and become “cool.” There’s only one apparel partner that can boost Notre Dame: Champion.

History of the matchup through the eyes of The Observer: Notre Dame vs. Stanford

The Observer | Friday, October 14, 2022

The Notre Dame-Stanford rivalry is a long-standing matchup, dating back to the close of Knute Rockne’s seventh season as head coach, the first Notre Dame national championship. Since then, Notre Dame leads the series 21-13.  The teams have gone head to head every year since 1988, sans the 2020 Covid-affected season, and The Observer has

From the Archives: False starts — Deceptively disappointing openings in Notre Dame football

Spencer Kelly | Sunday, September 18, 2022

The fanfare that characterized the beginning of the Freeman Era has all but silenced at this point. Even after capturing his first win against the California Golden Bears on Saturday, another shaky Irish performance has skeptics of Marcus Freeman continuing to question his faculty as a head coach. But as some reporters have pointed out,

Notre Dame football head coach Marcus Freeman discusses leadership

Maggie Eastland | Monday, February 28, 2022

He gets his work ethic from his father and his selflessness from his mother, but his emphasis on player relationships as Notre Dame head coach is his own. “I love coaching,” Marcus Freeman said. “I love to see our players have success, and so that’s my motivation. That’s my inspiration — to work my tail

A response to ‘The power of Notre Dame’s Christian left’

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, February 9, 2021

While Clark Bowden is certainly entitled to his opinion, he is not entitled to alternative facts. Mr. Bowden claimed that Notre Dame did not respond to former football coach Lou Holtz’s remarks at the Republican National Convention when, in fact, a statement was issued the day after the speech. He implies that, while faculty and students protested

Lou Holtz and Notre Dame’s hypocrisy

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Last month, Lou Holtz spoke at the Republican National Convention. During his speech he called out former Vice President Biden for his support of abortion rights and lauded President Trump’s pro-life agenda. He said Biden and other Catholic politicians who held similar views are “Catholic in name only,” meaning radical pro-choice actions taken and positions

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
