Aidan Thomas | Tuesday, November 30, 2021

In a press conference Tuesday morning, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick addressed questions regarding both the immediate and long-term implications of the recent Brian Kelly news. The press conference lasted about 30 minutes. Prior to it, Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins issued this statement for immediate release: “On behalf of the University of

When the news of Brian Kelly’s departure from Notre Dame broke Monday evening, Irish players (current, former and future), as well as fans across the country, were shaken up. It’s finally official: Kelly will take up the head coaching position at LSU. But what does that mean for the Irish? Immediate fallout: Who else is

Brian Kelly leaves Notre Dame, accepts head coaching job at LSU

Observer Sports Staff | Tuesday, November 30, 2021

In a move that has turned the college football world upside down, the LSU Tigers have hired Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame. The Tigers had a head coaching vacancy after parting ways with Ed Orgeron this season. National champions in 2019, LSU has gone just 11-11 in their past two seasons, with an upcoming

The Observer’s Roundtable Week 10

Sam Ouhaj, Thomas Zwiller, Jamison Cook and John Stolmeier | Wednesday, November 3, 2021

The release of the CFP rankings by the committee has left many fans confused and angry, including us at the Roundtable. However, these rankings are bound to change as we enter the 10th week of college football and were definitely done intentionally. Regardless of what we may think, it is time to break down this

Coolican: Clemson deserves celebration, not criticism

Liam Coolican | Wednesday, January 15, 2020

On their way to the national title game, Clemson had many doubters. The media has been lambasting them all year for playing in a weak conference and not being as good as last year’s title-winning team was, which is not completely untrue. The ACC, especially this year, was arguably the worst of the Power Five

Mulvena: Coach O story is telling of coaching role

Connor Mulvena | Wednesday, December 4, 2019

Last night ESPN published a feature, written by Alex Scarborough, on coach Ed Orgeron, head coach of the No. 2 LSU Tigers, that I highly encourage every college football fan to read. In interviews with phenom quarterback Joe Burrow and Orgeron himself, Scarborough dives into recent rise of LSU. But more than this, I think

Greason: Northwestern game will set tone for rest of season

Elizabeth Greason | Friday, November 2, 2018

It is extremely difficult to go undefeated in college football. On a week-to-week basis, teams drop out of the elusive category surprisingly after a poor performance (or a shockingly good performance from their opponent). No team is immune. At this point in the season, we’ve narrowed the field of undefeateds down to just four remaining

Mazurek: Citrus Bowl win foreshadows a bright 2018 for Irish

Marek Mazurek | Monday, January 1, 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. — Today is the first day of 2018, but for many it still feels like 2017. For Brian Kelly, it must feel more like 2014. That year, the Irish were ranked as high as No. 5 before losing the final four games of the season. But a 31-28 win over LSU in the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
