On ‘The Record’: Supergroup Boygenius’ debut album

Anna Falk | Monday, April 17, 2023

Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker have made incredible music as individual artists. As the supergroup Boygenius, they are unstoppable. The trio had previously released a self-titled EP in 2018, a six-track collection of lyrically masterful, gut-wrenching ballads which was well-received by fans and critics alike. With their limited yet addictive discography, fans craved

Boygenius is back together and better than ever

Claire Lyons | Wednesday, February 8, 2023

In 2018, friends Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers sat down in the recording studio and started spitballing ideas. Their debut EP, “Boygenius,” was met with critical acclaim for both songwriting and sonic cohesion.  The self-titled debut album might ring some bells for people who have been paying attention to the music industry, but

‘From 2 to 3’: The ordinary turned extraordinary

Anna Falk | Tuesday, March 22, 2022

The evolution of a band and their music is one of the most fascinating things to see. Sometimes they evolve for the better, and other times for the worse. There are even times when a band’s evolution doesn’t do anything but make them more interesting. This area is where I see “From 2 to 3,”

‘Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You’: A double album that doesn’t feel like one

Matheus Herndl | Wednesday, February 23, 2022

This is why records like Clash’s “London Calling” and Swans’ “Soundtracks for the Blind” are some of my all-time favorites, not only

Thank you for sharing your Spotify Wrapped

Colleen Fischer | Friday, December 4, 2020

The first thing I realized when I watched my first Bob Dylan interview was that he talked like my uncle who grew up in the ’60s and ’70s. Their Midwestern accents were paired with a syncopated rhythm and constant mystery that had me hanging on every word. I’ve noticed similarities between people I know and

Scene Selections: New Singles

Ryan Israel, Margaret McGreevy, Martin Kennedy and Nora McGreevy | Thursday, November 1, 2018

Every once in a while it’s a good idea to ditch the algorithm-driven coldness of Spotify’s “New Releases” tab or Apple Music’s “New Music” section. Instead, turn to humanity and rely on your favorite Scene writers to recommend what might be your new favorite song. “Alien” — Beach House By Ryan Israel, Scene Writer Beach

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
