Thoughts and prayers: an undermined response to mass shootings

Blake Ziegler | Friday, September 6, 2019

In wake of the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings, Americans are reminded of a grim cycle: a shooting occurs, social media responds, no action is taken. Angered by these events, individuals often criticize the infamous, yet well-intentioned, phrase “thoughts and prayers”. As social media floods with meaningless arguments and shouting matches, a common criticism

Fatherlessness and American violence

Eddie Damstra | Thursday, March 1, 2018

Sarah Cate Baker | Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Yet another mass shooting has rocked the United States. Or should I say “rocked” — was anyone really surprised when reports of multiple people killed by a lone gunman started filing in? And when multiple people turned into 26, and the gunman into ex-military with a shady history, and the gun into an AR-15 —

Gary Caruso | Friday, December 4, 2015

A current Notre Dame senior administrator’s spouse — a fundamentally conservative Catholic who unquestionably follows every entrenched exclusionary edict espoused by the likes of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan — several years ago told me to leave Catholicism if I did not like it. To this day it angers me to recollect that moment of

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”.
