South Park’s surprisingly accurate portrayal of depression

Gabriel Zarazua | Tuesday, March 7, 2023

Depression is a difficult topic to discuss. There are different levels to it. What may seem severe depression to one person may be just general sadness to another. However, with all of us being in college, I feel we have all had those waves of sadness at one point in our lives. Where we want

UCC, students discuss mental health resources and new national suicide hotline number

Jenna Abu-Lughod | Wednesday, February 8, 2023

Conversations surrounding mental health care and destigmatization continue across the country, as well on campus. In particular, many have heralded a new phone hotline, 988, specifically for people experiencing a suicidal crisis or emotional distress. “Mental health is an ongoing issue that students face in an intensely academic environment like Notre Dame,” sophomore Jane Stallman,

‘People with mental illnesses are still people’: Students empower adults to share life stories through ‘Our Stories’ book

Ryan Peters | Wednesday, March 30, 2022

When John Wilford was first introduced to the Sunshine Clubhouse in South Bend, he heard the clubhouse was looking to start a newsletter. A former director of biotechnology equipment production, Wilford saw a row of nonfunctioning computers and went to work. He managed to get a few of the computers up and running and helped

Support from the Notre Dame community

Anna Hurt | Tuesday, November 16, 2021

About a month ago I lost my little brother. He was my Irish twin, not even a year younger than I am. I don’t remember a time without him. Losing him to mental illness shattered my heart in a way that I don’t think I can ever recover from. In the month I’ve been back

An organized mess

Show Some Skin | Thursday, May 6, 2021

Beep Beep Beep! My alarm goes off. I reach for my phone to turn off my 7:50 a.m. alarm, the one that rings Monday through Thursday except it is not 7:50 a.m. It is 8:05 a.m. Somehow, I must have instinctively snoozed my alarm, more than once, because I don’t remember it going off the

‘Eighth Grade’ profoundly comforting, heartbreaking

Nora McGreevy | Monday, September 3, 2018

Eighth grade is the worst. Take the birthday pool party, for instance. For the introverted, self-conscious kid with anxiety, a pool party is a minefield of potential trauma. Social interaction without the comfortable confines of the classroom, gift-giving, navigating conversations with your cliquey peers — and all in swimsuits, no less. “Eighth Grade,” directed by Bo

Visually stunning ‘Legion’ continues to surprise

Nicholas Ottone | Thursday, April 19, 2018

Madness. “Legion,” now airing its second season on FX, is obsessed with the concept of madness. It seeps into the visual aesthetic, structure and sound. “Legion” poses a universe slightly skewed from our own to examine the delicate and easily upset balance between order and chaos. Yet, its most terrifying stretches delve deep into the

Where are they now? Where aren’t they yet? Catching up with Leyland Kirby

Adrian Mark Lore | Friday, November 17, 2017

It’s not possible to write about the mercurial Leyland Kirby today without discussing his output as The Caretaker, nor is it possible to discuss The Caretaker without first bringing up “An Empty Bliss Beyond This World.” If you were anywhere online in 2011 — on a music forum or news website, at least — it’s

‘You’re The Worst’ balances comedy and sympathy

John Wilson | Thursday, October 5, 2017

Season 4 of the FX comedy “You’re The Worst” begins with a new title sequence that cements many of the changes the show and the characters in it underwent in Season 3. As the show has grown, it has become less and less centered upon the original lead characters, Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya

Club hosts week of events to raise awareness for mental illnesses

Selena Ponio | Tuesday, October 3, 2017

As students leave the library after a late night of studying, they are greeted with a slightly different version of a beloved mural: Touchdown Jesus lit up green. This week, the Active Minds club — formerly National Alliance on Mental Illness — is hosting Irish State of MiND: Mental Illness Awareness Week with a series

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
