McGuinness: The power of great sports journalism

Andrew McGuinness | Wednesday, March 22, 2023

The music had faded. My parents had been called. Some 1,100 miles away, more champagne than any college student could fathom was about to be sprayed. The moment that had been 4,014 days in the making had already happened. But there was still one more thing I needed to see for it all to sink

McGuinness: Taking stock of the MLB postseason race

Andrew McGuinness | Thursday, September 15, 2022

There are few moments as exciting on the sports calendar as the final three weeks of an MLB season. The everyday nature of the sport captivates the emotions of fans and their teams whose destinations after the regular season ends on Oct. 5 remain unknown. Add in an extra wild card spot in each league

What To Watch For In Final Week Of MLB Regular Season

Andrew McGuinness | Tuesday, September 28, 2021

Six months have never gone by so fast. It seems like just yesterday it was Opening Day with hope abounding for all 30 clubs. It never lasts, of course. As always, there have been over and underachievers, and a season that figured to be unpredictable as any coming off a shortened 60-game 2020 season has

McGuinness: Sizing Up MLB’s Tightest 2021 Postseason Races

Andrew McGuinness | Thursday, September 2, 2021

Depending on your rooting interests, this is either the most exciting or stressful time of the baseball season. If your team is a bottom feeder or can already see the X next to their name, you can sit back and watch the chaos unfold. Everyone else will spend the next month biting their nails and

McGuinness: Previewing the 2020 World Series

Andrew McGuinness | Monday, October 19, 2020

Even baseball’s biggest detractors have to admit that this year’s postseason has been pretty great. The larger-than-usual field didn’t dilute the quality of play in the later rounds, as this year’s tournament was just as — if not more — exciting than most, even if fans have only been allowed to attend the NLCS and

McGuinness: Previewing the 2020 ALCS and NLCS

Andrew McGuinness | Monday, October 12, 2020

While this may be the longest postseason ever in terms of games played, the time has flown by since the MLB postseason began two weeks ago. We’ve made our way from sixteen teams, six more than any postseason field ever, down to the final four, with those teams just four wins away from earning the

Moller: October Madness lies ahead

Nate Moller | Tuesday, September 22, 2020

The 2020 MLB regular season is coming to an end soon, which means that the postseason is just around the corner. The regular season has been anything but normal, and it appears that the postseason will be just as crazy as well.  The format for the 2020 postseason is very different compared to a normal

Thomas: Do you even bandwagon? A guide on who to root for this October

Aidan Thomas | Monday, October 7, 2019

I’m in a weird position this fall. Well, before I continue, I should warn you all I am one of the “greedy New England swine” as described by Connor Mulvena in his recent piece depicting the horrors of being a New York sports fan. My beloved Boston Red Sox saw an impressive three-year run end

Coolican: Why playoff baseball is so entertaining

Liam Coolican | Friday, October 4, 2019

There is something about baseball in October that is just different. The crisp fall air, the fans packing the ballpark, tension hanging in the air on every pitch.    I have been captivated by baseball ever since I went to my first game at seven years old. However, these last few years I have watched less

Tobias Hoonhout | Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Well, for the first time ever, not one, but two divisions in the same season took an extra tiebreaker to figure out the MLB playoff picture. But after some stellar baseball Monday, the stage is set for the National League playoffs. Let’s take an opening-round look at who will move on in the hunt for

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
