Gay love laid ‘Bare’ in PEMCo’s fall show

Claire Lyons | Monday, December 5, 2022

As Congress was passing the Respect for Marriage Act last week, members of Pasquerilla East Musical Company (PEMCo) were hard at work preparing for their fall show, “Bare: A Pop Opera,” which features a closeted gay couple.  “Bare” is a rock-musical focusing on the secret lives of a group of private Catholic boarding school students.

FTT’s “Pippin” does remarkably well

Marcelle Couto | Tuesday, October 11, 2022

“Pippin” revolutionized Broadway at the time of its debut in 1972. With a daring structure and an innovation of metalanguage, the musical won five Tony Awards for telling the tale of Prince Pippin, the heir to the throne of King Charlemagne, which follows a troubled existential journey in search of the meaning of life. ‘Thank You For the Music[al]’: a reflection on ‘Mamma Mia!’

Maggie Clark | Wednesday, April 13, 2022

Last week, many tri-campus community students (including me) got the chance to revisit a timeless tale of love, family and, most importantly, ABBA. As part of their SunTostal programming, SUB offered a screening of the beloved “Mamma Mia!.” While I am sure many students watched the movie on this special night, I watched it with

‘Encanto’ thrills audiences with vibrant artistry and an unexpected message

Marcelle Couto | Thursday, January 13, 2022

When Disney first advertised the production of “Encanto,” scarce information about the plot appeared to indicate the film would accord with the studio’s traditional and effective animation formula, ridden with color, unique characters and, above all, overflowing with magic. However, the new film by directors Byron Howard (“Tangled” and “Bolt”) and Jared Bush (“Zootopia” and

Marcelle Couto | Thursday, October 28, 2021

A novel version of “West Side Story” hits theaters this December. The musical film — a cinema classic — will now star Ansel Elgort and recently acclaimed Hollywood star Rachel Zegler as the leads. The film has been complete for a long time as it was supposed to debut last year. A remake of the

Surprisingly, Ben Platt’s make-up isn’t the worst thing about ‘Dear Evan Hansen’

Christine Hilario | Tuesday, September 14, 2021

After witnessing Ben Platt’s decrepit, foundation-caked face in the first “Dear Evan Hansen” trailer back in May, I immediately checked IMDB to figure out how old all the actors playing teenage characters were. It turned out that Platt isn’t much older than the rest of the cast. There’s just something about how obviously the film

‘Something Rotten!’: The grand reopening of theater

Sophia Michetti | Tuesday, April 13, 2021

Live theater has returned to Notre Dame with the April 2021 PEMCo production of “Something Rotten!” With theaters being closed for over a year during the COVID-19 pandemic, the dimming of the lights and the bright sound of the flute coming through the opening overture was a warm welcome for all theater lovers. PEMCo’s ‘The Wild Party’ pushes the envelope

Mike Donovan | Thursday, February 27, 2020

Deep in the heart of parietal country, under Our Lady’s persistent gaze, frank discussions of sex are few and far between. Even rarer: blunt artistic depictions of the amorous subject. Lecherous sins more often sit in silence — on everyone’s mind, discussed in private but almost never in performance. Not here. Not at this fine

‘Bandstand’ hits all the right notes at the Morris Center

Caroline Lezny | Tuesday, January 28, 2020

Jazz and nightclubs, swing dancing and radio contests: these are probably not the hallmarks of World War II narratives — and with good reason. The recent Broadway musical “Bandstand,” however, embraces the unexpected in its synthesis of music, dance and devastatingly candid storytelling. This past weekend, South Bend’s Morris Performing Arts Center presented the Broadway

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
