‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’: Disney’s most underrated masterpiece

Marcelle Couto | Wednesday, November 9, 2022

After acquiring a copy of Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” during fall break, I was suddenly in the mood to rewatch the Disney animated musical. Doing so made me realize, not for the first time, how criminally underrated this adaptation is. Not only was it not as successful as other Disney films, but it

Zwiller: Give Le Batard, Stugotz and Co. a Grammy

Thomas Zwiller | Wednesday, March 23, 2022

I am generally not a music person; I prefer Zach Lowe to LOW, the ’90s indie rock band. But sometimes, a piece of music comes along and changes the musical landscape. And I found that music through my love of podcasting.  The Dan Le Batard show — the upstart pirate ship that left ESPN —

‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’: A countdown to adulthood

Rachel Hartmann | Friday, January 14, 2022

Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Tick, Tick… Boom!” is a new movie musical ode to Broadway musicals and a love letter to all the songwriters and playwrights in Broadway. The production is an homage to the late Johnathan Larson — the writer who created the original “Tick, Tick… Boom!” stageplay and Tony Award-winning “Rent.” In “Tick,

My evening with Matthew Morrison

Maggie Klaers | Wednesday, September 29, 2021

“An Evening with Matthew Morrison.” That’s all I knew, and it was enough to get me to the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (DPAC) last Friday night. If you aren’t familiar with Matthew Morrison, he’s a Broadway star, turned Glee teacher, turned cyber-bullying victim. I only knew him from his star role as Mr. Scheuster on

‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ Review

Alexandra Lowery | Thursday, February 11, 2016

The 2002 Tony-winning musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” gained commercial success and popular praise throughout its 903-show run by giving Broadway audiences what they had been yearning for years: the glitz of the 1920s, show-stopping show tunes and tap. The Pasquerilla East Musical Company (PEMCo) tackles the Broadway giant this weekend in Washington Hall, proving that

Rock God: A look back on ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

Emilie Kefalas | Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Though it’s not as simple as “Cats,” one could certainly try to make the case that Andrew Lloyd Webber is, in fact, not a god. We’re talking as mortal, as English and as prone to illness as the next bloke. However, God owes Sir Webber some thanks for giving His Son and His Word an

‘Frozen’ breaks the ice of tradition

Erin Thomassen | Tuesday, January 14, 2014

Even though temperatures were below freezing over break, “Frozen” continued to attract and delight Notre Dame students. Lauded in a trailer as “the greatest Disney movie since ‘The Lion King,’” many students, like sophomore Annemarie Coman, flocked to theatres with a mix of “high expectations and skepticism.” Few were disappointed, however. Junior Ashley Towne said

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
