Observer Sports Staff | Tuesday, April 18, 2023

It’s been over a month since the final game of his Notre Dame coaching career. But Mike Brey has hardly been out of the spotlight since his time in South Bend came to a close. At one point during the offseason — a much longer one than the Irish were hoping for after making their

My NBA Awards Ballot

Matthew Crow | Friday, April 8, 2022

After another thrilling edition of March Madness, the basketball world now shifts its attention back to the NBA, where teams are counting down the final days of the regular season and gearing up for the playoffs (or the draft lottery). With that being the case, the annual season-long discussion over the NBA’s end-of-year awards has

Crow: The Celtics are finally the team they were supposed to be

Matthew Crow | Friday, February 18, 2022

As the calendar shifted to 2022, the Boston Celtics were at a crossroads. After reaching three Conference Finals in four years, they seemed well-positioned to be a top team for years to come. However, their upward trajectory was put into serious doubt during the 2020-21 season, as they slogged their way to a middling 36-36

O’Donoghue: The Philadelphia 76ers might be impending Champions

Dylan O’Donoghue | Thursday, February 17, 2022

It happened. The heavily anticipated trade between the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers finally happened. It certainly lived up to the hype. Former league MVP James Harden, along with veteran power forward Paul Millsap, have been sent to Philadelphia in exchange for 3-time All-Star Ben Simmons, sharpshooter Seth Curry, Andre Drummond and two first-round

Coolican: Ben Simmons is exactly what the Nets needed

Liam Coolican | Monday, February 14, 2022

Almost a year ago, I wrote a Sports Authority about the Brooklyn Nets’ new big three. While it didn’t pan out that way, it was abundantly clear, from the short time that trio shared the court, that it could have been something special. It is a shame that we as basketball fans only got to

Kalemkerian: The King’s Successor

John Kalemkerian | Tuesday, February 8, 2022

Love him or hate him, LeBron James embodies what we as fans love about basketball. From the poster dunks, to the no-look assists, to the clutch three-pointers, he brings everything to the table. In the same way that Michael Jordan defined the 90’s and Kobe Bryant defined the 2000’s, LeBron has been the face of

Can back-to-back first overall picks save the Detroit Pistons?

Jack Sirianni | Friday, January 28, 2022

Abysmal, atrocious, miserable, and disappointingly subpar.  These are all words that would be fitting to describe the 2021-2022 campaign for the Detroit Pistons thus far.  Barring a monumental turnaround, this season seems like a wash for the team. And a turnaround seems unlikely considering the hole that the Pistons currently lie in. In the Eastern

Kiara Schmidt | Friday, November 5, 2021

With the start of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Season, fans celebrate being able to watch their favorite stars like Lebron James and Stephen Curry back in action. However, with recent rule changes made by the league ahead of the 2021-22 season, this year’s competition looks a little different. The NBA has evolved tremendously throughout the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
