Zwiller: Predicting this week’s CFP Rankings

Thomas Zwiller | Monday, November 8, 2021

When I read the first College Football Playoff (CFP) Rankings, I had a feeling I was not the only person slightly annoyed. The Playoff Committee has always been relatively high on Alabama in the past; the year they did not make it (2019-2020), I honestly thought the Committee would find a way to sneak a two-loss Alabama

Thomas: So Jack, what about those jerseys in the bookstore?

Aidan Thomas | Monday, March 1, 2021

“As those rules are developed, it is our strong desire that student-athletes be allowed to benefit directly from allowing their name, image and performance history to be used in the game”. Brave words, Jack. When Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick came out with that quote, the news spread like wildfire — no Notre Dame

Ward: Video game company challenges NCAA

Jimmy Ward | Monday, February 8, 2021

The NCAA is in panic mode. They have seen this coming from miles away. And their cards are starting to tumble, all because of a video game. This has been something the NCAA knew loomed over their heads since 2013, the last year that video game developer EA Sports released their “NCAA Football” series.  Fans

Observer Roundtable: College football and NFL game picks

Liam Coolican, Nate Moller and Patrick Gallagher | Friday, October 30, 2020

Well it finally happened. After six straight upset picks, Patrick Gallagher finally missed on one, giving everyone else a chance to catch up. Unfortunately, only Nate Moller notched a correct upset call last week, correctly nailing the Wake Forest over Virginia Tech result. As such, Patrick maintains a 16-point advantage in this week’s leaderboard, while

Kramer: We don’t need football

David Kramer | Monday, August 17, 2020

“We want to be safe and we want to play.” So begins the open letter penned by the Irish football SWAT captains. More of a desperate plea for clearance than an expression of intent, the message that flooded social media platforms this past week came ahead of the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences’ nightmarish news.

Thomas: Stop rewarding mediocrity, a 5-step criticism of College Football’s bowl season

Aidan Thomas | Tuesday, December 10, 2019

Bowl games.  Wow, there’s a lot I would like to say on the topic, so my challenge here is limiting myself to about 1,000 words on how much I hate the bowl system. Here’s to hoping I can control my ranting in this top five list of things I would change about how the system

It’s conference championship weekend, and that means we’re back with another edition of Observer Roundtable Predictions. The SEC, Big 10 and Big 12 title games made our docket for this week, but check out the NFL and upsets piece to check in on some of our bold calls in other championship match-ups. As for how

Capece: Keep the four-team CFP format

Colin Capece | Friday, December 6, 2019

As someone who has been enamored with college football for as long as I can remember, this coming Saturday will be an absolute dream. Beginning at noon with the Big 12 championship game between Oklahoma and Baylor, there will be conference championship games to watch all day long. Every Power Five final features a matchup

Observer Roundtable College Picks: Can Ohio State keep rolling?

Aidan Thomas | Thursday, November 21, 2019

Minnesota has really kicked us in the teeth the last two weeks. After all but David Kramer picked the Gophers to fall to Penn State, every one of us except Nate Moller picked Minnesota to beat Iowa. Overall regarding Minnesota games, we’re a combined 2-10, so to make ourselves feel better we’re not putting them

Ward: Give Heisman votes to former players

Jimmy Ward | Monday, November 18, 2019

I’m not a big fan of the Heisman Trophy in general. Ever since the award was given to Ohio State’s Troy Smith in 2006 over Brady Quinn, I started to tune out to the ridiculous spectacle. In my lifetime, this is when the award started to go downhill, but it can easily be argued that

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
