Olivia Schatz | Saturday, March 25, 2023

The Fighting Irish traveled to Greenville, South Carolina to take on the second-seeded Terrapins. After a season plagued with injuries, the Irish were determined to prove their worth. However, it was Maryland who would ultimately pull ahead and win 76-59. The Terrapins got out on an early lead, with a 5-0 run. Junior forward Maddy

Citron steps into leadership role as Irish make tournament run

Liam Coolican | Friday, March 24, 2023

When All-American guard Olivia Miles went down with a knee injury Feb. 26, many thought Notre Dame’s dreams of a deep tournament run were all but over. The Irish were already missing sharpshooting graduate guard Dara Mabrey, who suffered a torn ACL in Jan., and it was clear in their blowout loss to Louisville in

Irish ready for high-stakes rematch against Maryland in Sweet 16

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, March 24, 2023

Triumph was in the air Sunday afternoon after the final buzzer sounded. Notre Dame had not only just knocked off Mississippi State in a 53-48 nail-biter to reach their second straight Sweet 16, but also chalked up yet another victory at Purcell Pavilion. Winning in South Bend has almost felt like a guarantee ever since

One convincing, one close victory bring Irish to Sweet 16

Andrew McGuinness | Tuesday, March 21, 2023

One year ago, Notre Dame women’s basketball suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Sweet 16. The Irish literally and figuratively threw away their chances at reaching the Elite Eight with a last-second turnover that sealed a 66-63 loss to North Carolina State. It was the type of loss that sits with a team long after

Irish officially rule Miles out for NCAA Tournament

Observer Sports Staff | Thursday, March 16, 2023

Just hours before the start of the NCAA Tournament, Notre Dame’s chances took a significant hit: the Irish announced sophomore guard Olivia Miles will be out for the remainder of the season. Miles has not played since Notre Dame’s regular season finale, an ultimately pyrrhic 68-65 victory on Feb. 26 at Louisville. The victory clinched

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament primer: Upsets, dark horses and title picks

Aidan Thomas | Wednesday, March 8, 2023

The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is generally less prone to upsets than the men’s tournament. But as the depth and talent in the field increase the parity of the event, upsets are beginning to happen with more frequency. Just last year, four teams sitting on the 11 and 12-seed lines won their opening game. Two

Everett: Tune in to the women’s Final Four to learn what women’s basketball is all about

Joe Everett | Friday, April 5, 2019

The two upcoming Final Four matchups this weekend should prove to be must-watch TV. No, I’m not talking about Michigan State-Texas Tech and Auburn-Virginia (though those should be great games as well). Instead, in this Sports Authority, I’m highlighting what should be an even better round of Final Four matchups: Baylor-Oregon and Notre Dame-Connecticut. But

Arike Ogunbowale’s confidence proves to be the difference maker

Daniel O'Boyle | Monday, April 2, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As Arike Ogunbowale climbed the ladder to cut down the net at Nationwide Arena, she stopped and looked around confused for a few seconds, miming a pair of scissors to show that she couldn’t find them. They were right at the top of the ladder, the same spot every other player on the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
