McGuinness: Ranking NHL playoff teams’ goal songs

Andrew McGuinness | Thursday, April 20, 2023

March Madness is just as notorious for its randomness on the court as it is for the randomness of filling out brackets. Every year, experts and people who know the game are beaten by people who pick teams based on mascots, where their neighbor’s cousin-in-law’s nephews go to school or which team has the hottest

Andrew McGuinness | Tuesday, April 5, 2022

Notre Dame’s hockey season officially ended last Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Minnesota State in the NCAA Tournament Regional Finals. For some of the graduating players on Notre Dame’s roster, it may be the end of their playing careers. But three skaters—senior defenseman Spencer Stastney, graduate student defenseman Adam Karashik, and senior forward Graham

The NHL equivalent of Christmas — the trade deadline — is almost here. In less than a week, the landscape of the league will look completely different. Contenders will gear up to address their weaknesses and push for the Stanley Cup. Rebuilding teams have the chance to haul in loads of picks and prospects that will

McGuinness: Five NHL trade deadline moves that make too much sense

Andrew McGuinness | Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Usually, in late February, hockey fans are gearing up for the trade deadline and all the pomp, circumstance and trades of fourth-line centers for fifth-round picks that come with it. That isn’t the case this year. The NHL pushed the deadline back to March 21 in response to their originally scheduled three-week break in February

McGuinness: Appreciating Claude Giroux, An Ultimate Flyer And Unsung Star

Andrew McGuinness | Tuesday, November 16, 2021

Over the last decade, the National Hockey League has seen the emergence and primes of some of the greatest stars in its history. Generational talents Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin started their careers in the mid-2000s, but most of their best seasons (and three of their four Stanley Cup wins) came during the last decade.

McGuinness: Evaluating The NHL’s Biggest Early Surprises

Andrew McGuinness | Thursday, November 4, 2021

We’ve reached November, which means two things are true in the NHL landscape. It is still way too early to care about the standings, but it is no longer too early to ignore them. And if you fire up the NHL app and scroll over to them, boy, you’ll find some shockers. Seven teams that

Andrew McGuinness | Thursday, October 7, 2021

Rejoice hockey fans; puck drop is almost here. In less than one week, the 104th season of NHL hockey begins. This is the honeymoon period, where all 32 teams have hope (ok, maybe not Buffalo) and anything seems possible. Rookies seem destined to take steps forward, the juggernauts of years past look somewhat vulnerable and

McGuinness: Biggest surprises of 2021 NHL season (so far)

Andrew McGuinness | Wednesday, March 17, 2021

The most unique season in the NHL’s 103-year history is about at its halfway point. Most teams are nearing the 50% mark of the pandemic-induced shortened season, giving us a good perception of their future. There’s still plenty of time for some teams to change their fate, but we have a pretty good feel of

Gibson: Hockey’s surprising southern spread

Dominic Gibson | Friday, October 23, 2020

When most people think about ice hockey, they think about cities like Montreal, Boston, Chicago and Detroit. They think about places where there is true winter, snow and bitter cold being the norms. They think about the numerous city rinks, where tournaments and leagues are played nearly every other day. But what about hockey in

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
