Thank you

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, August 26, 2020

I write today to thank the ND administration for its collective herculean efforts to bring students back for a “live” fall semester despite initial challenges. I do so as an enthusiastic member of the Notre Dame family — I am a double Domer. My wife is a double Domer. My siblings are all Domers. Our

Where’s the Notre Dame family?

Mariah Rush | Wednesday, August 12, 2020

Let me tell you a secret — I never really believed in the Notre Dame family. I’m naturally a skeptic, and a cynic at heart. Growing up in South Bend didn’t have the same Notre Dame effect on me as it did on some of my peers. And here’s one of the reasons why: Once

Observer Editorial: This isn’t the family we know

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, February 28, 2020

The tri-campus community has often been hailed for its sense of family. In moments of difficulty, we come together. But in recent years, that hasn’t always been the case — and the student government elections only spotlight this division. On Friday, we released a lengthy report detailing the tornado of allegations, sanctions and appeals in

Respect committed residents, include off-campus seniors

Dessi Gomez | Friday, February 14, 2020

In realizing that I am very heavily leaning towards moving off campus next year, I’m going to take this Inside Column space to dig up the ‘Senior Exclusion Policy’ again. Although many talks, panels and surveys have been arranged since the initial announcement of what is formally known as the “policy differentiating on- and off-campus

A house divided: The Notre Dame family

Grace McDermott | Tuesday, September 17, 2019

Five months ago, my little sister performed the ultimate act of betrayal upon our family – she chose to attend the University of Michigan instead of Notre Dame. Obviously, she has been disowned and written out of the will, and she is no longer welcome at family holidays. Kidding (mostly). For those of you –

Fighting for our family

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, September 17, 2019

What does it mean to be part of a family? I’ll leave the answer to my philosopher roommates or my theologian wife, but surely, it’s more than meets the eye. Surely, it’s not ad hominem attacks, assaults on each other or disagreeable rules. Siblings fight, children rebel and parents make difficult choices, but the essence

Family first: Taking a staND for all

Letter to the Editor | Monday, August 27, 2018

Recently, a fellow student published a column with statistics on DACA students and Dreamers. As student government leaders, we felt that it was imperative to contribute to this conversation. As a Catholic Institution, Notre Dame has an obligation to stand for the dignity of all people. Reducing a group of students on our campus down to

Welcome to our family

Dear first years, On behalf of student government and then rest of the student body, welcome to Notre Dame. We’re Gates and Corey, and we’ll be serving as your student body president and vice president this year. In the coming weeks, as you settle into your dorms and get to know people who will become

A home, a history, a family

Letter to the Editor | Friday, March 23, 2018

My first interaction with ND Listens comes not from my time on campus or a flyer in the Dining Hall, but from my dad’s phone ringing around dinner time when I was young. Sometimes he would brush off the student on the line or quickly rattle off his credit card number, but with others he

On the shoulders of Knights

Lauren Fox | Wednesday, March 7, 2018

Between a set of double doors, 16 men from Keenan Hall raised a fellow Knight on their shoulders and sang “Happy Birthday” to him at the top of their lungs. It was more screaming than singing. It was crowded. It only lasted a few minutes. And it was junior Kevin Schneier’s favorite moment of the

In the wake of the University’s announcement of In the wake of the University’s announcement of Zahm House’s disbandment, The Observer began an investigation into the dorm’s so-called “troubling culture.”

The investigation revealed several incidents contributing to the administration’s decision, including Zahm residents’ disregard for and plans to alter COVID-19 tests as well as vandalism within and beyond the walls of the hall.

The Observer also obtained a series of email chains sent between roughly 200 Zahm residents from 2019-2020, in which students shared graphic and misogynistic jokes regarding sex and sexual assault.

After a week filled with virtual panels and a Yom After a week filled with virtual panels and a Yom Hashoah Holocaust Remembrance prayer service, today marks the final day of Antisemitism Awareness Week.

In light of the recent increase in antisemitism, the Jewish Club at Notre Dame organized this event to both engage and educate the community about combatting this type of hatred.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame’s student senate unanimously voted to pass Resolution SS 2021-37, which calls upon the University to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) non-legally binding working definition of antisemitism — one that has been embraced by nations, international organizations and universities across the world.

“One of the purposes of the working definition is that it’s hard to combat something if you can’t name it, or understand what it is and define it,” said Jewish Club president junior Bella Niforatos about the importance of adopting IHRA’s definition.

After Tuesday’s incident — where a group of non-ND affiliated people zoom-bombed one of the presentations — Jewish Club secretary sophomore Blake Ziegler said the club received an outpour of support from different members of the community. To create a more inclusive space, he said Notre Dame should actively embrace its Jewish members.

“The best way the Notre Dame community can show solidarity with the Jewish community is honestly just engagement, education, learning more about Judaism, engaging your Jewish friends and family, being open to listening to them and their concerns and addressing them,” he said.

After this week, Niforatos said there is one thing the Notre Dame community should remember: “If you have a voice, then you should use it.”

ICYMI: University President Fr. John Jenkins annou ICYMI: University President Fr. John Jenkins announced in a Wednesday email that Notre Dame will require all undergraduate, graduate and professional students to be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus in order to enroll for the 2021-2022 academic year.

“Our goal for the fall semester will be to have as many members of the campus community vaccinated as possible, thereby reducing the risk of infection on campus and in the local community,” Jenkins said.

The University will respect documented medical and religious exemptions to the vaccine, according to the email.
