What does it take to be a Notre Dame leprechaun?

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, April 20, 2023

Some would call it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Others, an event unlike any other. And still, others may find the only appropriate descriptor to be “lucky.” Tryouts to be one of the next students to portray the Notre Dame leprechaun are in full swing here on campus, with the festivities of the final round taking place

From the Archives: The name, the myth, the legend — the Fighting Irish

Uyen Le, Spencer Kelly and Erin Drumm | Tuesday, February 15, 2022

Editor’s Note: The Observer previously incorrectly listed the creator of the Fighting Irish logo as Jim T. Butz. The logo’s creator was Ted Drake. The Observer regrets this error. One of the first questions I had when I first toured Notre Dame was: “Why does a university with a French name possess an Irish mascot

Notre Dame cheerleading reaches new heights during 2019-2020 seasons

Greg McKenna | Friday, May 15, 2020

Notre Dame cheerleading is undoubtedly one of the visible teams on campus. However, many Notre Dame students do not understand the true scope of what the hardworking student-athletes do to represent the athletic department and the University’s many storied programs throughout the entire collegiate sports calendar. “Notre Dame cheerleading consists of roughly 42 members of

An unfortunate bout with racism at Georgia

Letter to the Editor | Friday, September 27, 2019

I do not know Samuel Jackson, other than that he is the primary Leprechaun this season for Notre Dame. Like many other Notre Dame fans, I was angered by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy’s racist tweet during the Louisville game that suggested the leprechaun had to be a certain color, size and mold and that

This year’s trio of leprechauns mascots is the most diverse in University history. Senior Samuel B. Jackson and junior Lynette Wukie are the second and third African Americans to serve in the role, and Wukie is the first woman. Junior Conal Fagan is the first native-Irish leprechaun. Jackson took the field for the first time

The leprechaun lineup for the 2019-20 school year has been determined the “most diverse roster” ever, the Notre Dame cheerleading program announced Tuesday. Junior Samuel Jackson and sophomores Conal Fagan and Lynnette Wukie will all act as the University’s mascot for the upcoming year, ringing in the most diverse group since the leprechaun became the

LepreCOUNT me in

Hannah Thomas | Tuesday, December 4, 2018

I, Hannah Thomas, should be the first female leprechaun to walk Notre Dame’s grounds. All drama aside, has anybody wondered why there has not been a female leprechaun? That is pretty much all I think about day and night. I would like to address the fact that I have red hair, freckles, blue eyes and

New football leprechaun reflects on journey

Courtney Becker | Friday, September 23, 2016

For junior Joe Fennessy, being the Notre Dame leprechaun is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. “I didn’t really have too much of a purpose freshman year,” he said. “I went to sports all the time. They used to count points for going to sports, so I came second in the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
