Professor of American studies and history Kathleen Sprows Cummings recently contributed to a podcast episode called “Nun of Us Are Friends” of the National Public Radio (NPR) series “Invisibilia.”  The episode told the story of two nuns who joined different convents in the 1960s and their experiences with the strict friendship rules the convents enforced

Rob Sheffield and the possibility for a genuine Rolling Stone

Colleen Fischer | Tuesday, March 16, 2021

Some side character from some movie I watched at some point in high school once said something along the lines of: “When there are two bands, there’s a scene, and when there’s a scene, there’s something to write about.” The first official issue of Rolling Stone featured stories about the Grateful Dead, Donovan and the

NPR’s Nina Totenberg discusses career, feminism

Ryan Kolakowski | Friday, February 8, 2019

When Nina Totenberg began pursuing a journalism career, she was required to overcome a massive cultural hurdle. “It was extremely difficult in the beginning,” Totenberg said. “People used to just say to me, ‘We don’t hire women.’” Despite the resistance that Totenberg faced, she continued to seek a role as a journalist and storyteller. Totenberg

Dasserghyans: Gwenno’s ‘Le Kov’ and the Cornish Revival

Carlos De Loera | Friday, April 6, 2018

A few weeks ago I was listening to All Songs Considered’s New Music Friday podcast and about midway through it, host Robin Hilton introduced an unidentified song by the artist Gwenno. It opened with a spacey synth which was met with a prolonged drum fill and then accompanied by a choir of strings; it was

In the next couple of weeks, Scene will be reviewing a handful of our favorite albums and movies released this past summer, but there was much more content we were regretfully unable to cover while on break. Get In ‘Formation’

Rilka Noel | Thursday, February 11, 2016

This Saturday, Beyoncé surprised us once again with the release of her newest music video “Formation.” Set in New Orleans, the video is an homage to the black south, natural hair and hot sauce. The video’s depictions of Hurricane Katrina and the “Black Lives Matter” movement represent a reclamation of blackness for Beyoncé and the

My Own “Drum Fill Friday”

Matt McMahon | Thursday, October 8, 2015

NPR has a semi-regular feature on their “All Songs Considered” web section that I always anticipate called “Drum Fill Friday.” In these posts, NPR music writer Robin Hilton tests readers’ ears with five-question quizzes challenging drum fill aficionados to identify songs through short snippets of their drum sections. Hilton often gets guest drummers to create

Radio: The new frontier?

Kitty Baker | Monday, August 31, 2015

One of the best episodes of the TV series Frasier is “Ham Radio.” Frasier attempts to direct an old radio drama, “Nightmare Inn,” to celebrate KACL’s (the radio station at which he works) 50th anniversary. The episode ends, of course, in complete disaster, as accidents and colliding personalities leave the drama unfinished. This episode never

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
