Aidan Thomas | Wednesday, March 8, 2023

The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is generally less prone to upsets than the men’s tournament. But as the depth and talent in the field increase the parity of the event, upsets are beginning to happen with more frequency. Just last year, four teams sitting on the 11 and 12-seed lines won their opening game. Two

Week 5 college football takeaways

Matthew Crow | Wednesday, October 5, 2022

The cost of firing a head coach in today’s college football landscape is higher than ever. Massive buyout payments that come with the early termination of a contract means that schools pay millions of dollars just to get their coaches to leave. After his exit in 2021, former LSU coach Ed Orgeron received a buyout

Crow: Three takeaways from Week 4 in College Football

Matthew Crow | Wednesday, September 28, 2022

The Big 12 is officially up for grabs Through four weeks of the college football season, we are at the stage where conference hierarchies typically begin to emerge and pecking orders come into focus. At the very least, it should now be clear which teams are legitimate conference championship contenders and which are not. Even

Carter Putz provides lone spark, looks to rally Irish

Jose Sanchez Cordova | Monday, June 20, 2022

There’s no way to sugarcoat it — Sunday night’s game against Oklahoma was a bad day for Notre Dame baseball. Head coach Link Jarrett summarized it well with his opening remark of the postgame press conference. “They outplayed us in essentially every phase of the game,” Jarrett said. The Irish used seven pitchers in a

Notre Dame falls 6-2 to Oklahoma in second game of College World Series

J.J. Post | Monday, June 20, 2022

Notre Dame suffered its first loss at the 2022 College World Series Sunday night, falling to Oklahoma 6-2. In a reverse of what gave the Irish the edge in prior matchups against Texas and Tennessee, Notre Dame’s bats ran cold for the majority of Sunday’s contest against the Sooners.  Oklahoma struggled early at the plate

Jose Sanchez Cordova | Thursday, June 16, 2022

Notre Dame baseball is headed to the College World Series for the third time in program history and the first time since 2002. It is the culmination of a remarkable resurgence for the Irish baseball program since head coach Link Jarrett arrived ahead of the 2020 season. Since then, Notre Dame has the second-best winning

Aidan Thomas | Thursday, June 16, 2022

The eight teams in the College World Series, aren‘t the same teams originally seeded in the top-8 spots — the Irish made sure at least one would be different. Considering their regional and super regional performances, these are the College World Series teams reseeded with players to watch, strengths and weaknesses. Arkansas Out of the

Irish look to move past Sooners in Norman

Greg McKenna | Monday, March 21, 2022

There were plenty of empty seats when Notre Dame downed UMass in Norman, Oklahoma, with an offensive blitz Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Most of those will likely be filled Monday night, and a majority of people packed in the Lloyd Noble Center won’t be rooting for Notre Dame when

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
