Carson: Cinderellas still alive this year

Alex Carson | Monday, March 27, 2017

There was no “Cinderella” this year, right? No. 12 seed Middle Tennessee was a good contender, but the Blue Raiders fell out of the tournament in the second round. Princeton, also a No. 12 seed, had a shot to become a tournament darling, but its final-seconds shot to beat Notre Dame was off-target. Many had

ND Football: a labor of love

Lucas Masin-Moyer | Thursday, September 15, 2016

After the Sept. 4 loss to Texas, Fr. Sorin’s unofficial parody Twitter account posted the following message: “It’s truly appropriate that today is Labor Day, because being an Irish fan is truly a labor of love.” I don’t think I could agree with anything more. The common joke amongst my friends is that I have “been a

Irish beat Ducks, win five straight

Hunter McDaniel | Friday, April 1, 2016

The rain couldn’t stop the red-hot Irish on Thursday night and neither could Oregon. In a game delayed by weather, Notre Dame (13-10, 4-5 ACC) held off the Ducks (11-10, 2-4 Pac-12), 6-3, for its fifth consecutive victory. Irish head coach Mik Aoki credited consistency for the current streak. “I think we’re bringing all of

Shepski sets team records in three-game sweep

Hunter McDaniel | Thursday, March 31, 2016

Last weekend, Notre Dame rode a three-game sweep of Virginia Tech to its first over-.500 record since the start of conference play. The Irish (12-10, 4-5 ACC) bats came alive in Blacksburg, Virginia, starting with a 16-4 pounding of the Hokies (10-16, 1-8) on Thursday night, led by sophomore designated hitter Jake Shepski. Shepski had a record-setting night

No. 23 Notre Dame competed in the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Arizona, this weekend, where it finished sixth in a strong field that included No. 16 San Diego State, UNLV, Kansas State, Ohio State and Oregon. The first two rounds were played Sunday, and as the day drew to a close, the Irish found themselves in fifth place

Carson: Pay attention to on-field results

Alex Carson | Monday, November 16, 2015

What’s the point of playing games if nobody’s going to pay attention to the results? I’m looking at you, AP poll. You got a lot of things wrong this week. Go down the list of tiebreakers in most major sports, and the one we default to is an intuitive one: head-to-head. It makes sense —

Zuba: Football playoff provides exciting finish

Samantha Zuba | Tuesday, January 13, 2015

We made it. The first College Football Playoff (CFP) happened. And now we can talk about it. The new ranking system and postseason format unfolded with a fanfare of doubts, questions and debate. Now, finally, those discussions can shift from speculation to reflection. The image doesn’t look half bad. The most obvious positive: the freshly

The ballad of Carl, the homeless bike mechanic

Charlie Ducey | Wednesday, November 12, 2014

We’ve all seen homeless people before. Chances are, we don’t know much more about them aside from what’s written on their flimsy cardboard signs streaked with black marker. I come from Portland, Oregon, the City of Roses. In addition to fragrant horticultural beauty, Portland is also home to thousands of homeless. One can hardly drive

Hartnett: Don’t miss these college game days

Brian Hartnett | Monday, October 6, 2014

Those of us who tuned into ESPN’s “College GameDay” last weekend were treated to even more than Katy Perry’s hard-hitting football analysis, as interesting as that was. ESPN’s flagship college sports program also granted us a look into the Grove, the 10-acre wooded area on Ole Miss’s campus where tailgating may be taken more seriously

Hartnett: Irish should be rejuvenated, encouraged from bye week (Sept. 26)

Brian Hartnett | Thursday, September 25, 2014

In the chaos of the short college football season, a bye week offers a chance for necessary respite. It allows teams to make personnel changes, rest injured players and watch the competition. I didn’t sit in on Notre Dame’s off-week practices and workouts, but from the sound of it, the Irish did all three of

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
