Klonsinski: There’s something in the air

Zach Klonsinski | Saturday, March 21, 2015

After needing an outstanding final defensive stand as time expired to “escape” — in the words of Irish head coach Mike Brey — CONSOL Energy Center with a victory over Northeastern on Thursday, you could forgive Notre Dame fans for thinking it was an ugly win. An hour later though, it sure looked a lot

Irish, Bulldogs set for Hoosier-state showdown Saturday night

Zach Klonsinski | Friday, March 20, 2015

Part of what makes the NCAA tournament such a spectacle are the matchups between teams who have no connection to each other. That won’t be the case tomorrow night in Pittsburgh, when Notre Dame and Butler meet in a Hoosier-state showdown with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen on the line. “There’s going to be a

Notre Dame survives Northeastern, 69-65, advances in NCAA Tournament

Mike Monaco | Friday, March 20, 2015

PITTSBURGH — Just as Notre Dame appeared to find its rhythm after a sluggish first half, Northeastern surged. And for a few tense minutes at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh on Thursday afternoon, things looked all too familiar for Notre Dame, which hadn’t won an NCAA tournament game since 2011. But the No. 3

Irish grind out win with team effort on offense

Zach Klonsinski | Friday, March 20, 2015

There aren’t any pictures on a stats sheet, which was probably good for No. 3 seed Notre Dame during its 69-65 victory Thursday over 14th-seeded Northeastern. The Irish (30-5, 14-4 ACC) ground out a victory, their first in an NCAA tournament since 2011, despite a strong challenge from the Huskies (23-12, 12-6 CAA). “’I told them

Two teams, two paths, one result

Renee Griffin and Zach Klonsinski | Thursday, March 19, 2015

There are always two sides to a story, and the tale of Notre Dame basketball this season followed that script perfectly. Following a 15-17 campaign in 2013-2014, the men’s squad came into the season talking about simply making the tournament. On the other hand, the Irish women were hungry for an NCAA title in 2015

One last ride for seniors

Brian Hartnett | Thursday, March 19, 2015

It’s not too difficult to spot the two seniors on Notre Dame, a No. 3 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament. They’re the team’s two leading scorers and are frequently on the court for upwards of 35 minutes per game. They’re even pictured on the media guide for Notre Dame, which will start the tournament

Monaco: Irish still have more to prove

Mike Monaco | Thursday, March 19, 2015

It’s there. Underneath the sliced-up nets still hanging around the necks of Jerian Grant and Pat Connaughton and knotted along the back of Bonzie Colson’s championship hat. It’s there. Underneath the Purcell Pavilion rafters from which an ACC championship banner will soon hang. It’s there. Underneath the still-lingering giddiness from a weekend’s triumph in Greensboro,

Mike Monaco | Tuesday, March 17, 2015

Less than 24 hours after winning the ACC tournament as the conference’s No. 3 seed, Notre Dame earned the No. 3 seed Sunday in the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament. The Irish (29-5, 14-4 ACC) will face No. 14 seed Northeastern on Thursday in Pittsburgh. Notre Dame rode a second-half surge past North Carolina, 90-82,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
