Art, the great balancing act

Ayden Kowalski | Monday, September 5, 2022

This past summer, I embarked on the adventure of creating an album. While artistic work is typically idealized as the realization of an unadulterated vision, I found the creative process to be a balancing act between the impulses of the audience and the various inclinations within the artist. If art imitates life, then the creative process is

A common future

Trevor Lwere | Monday, April 25, 2022

As today’s youth, we are coming of age when the world faces serious existential challenges which require new thinking and a new basis for transnational cooperation. Otherwise, we may have no earth or human life to talk about in several decades to come. Neither new thinking nor a new basis of collaboration is possible if

A man of the people

Mikey Colgan | Tuesday, March 15, 2022

During spring break, I was lucky to be able to spend some time with my grandfather, George Dargati, or Poppy, as I call him. After some long conversations and many laughs over meals with him and some of my family, I learned many invaluable lessons that are especially applicable to the Notre Dame community. George

Winning with a full house

Julianna Conley | Tuesday, March 31, 2020

Unpopular opinion: I am thankful for the coronavirus. I am grateful for the quarantine. I am glad to be home. The day Fr. Jenkins’ message to students announced the move to online classes, I was devastated. Like many other students, I felt robbed. Cheated of one-eighth of my college experience. Heartbroken by the thought of

Seeing both sides of the same coin

Emma Farnan | Wednesday, October 10, 2018

The past year of my life has been incredibly exciting and eye-opening. In addition to expanding my academic horizon with every other student at Notre Dame, I have also taken medically prescribed hormones each day to physically transition into a woman. I am transgender and have finally been living as myself, a woman, for the

How are you really?

Letter to the Editor | Monday, December 4, 2017

“How are you doing?” “I’m good!” Every day I hear these words, and every day they strike me as fake and superficial. There seems to be this unspoken rule that says a Notre Dame student must act as if we have everything under control. When asked, students will say they are balancing all of their

Don’t expect anything this semester

Matthew Williams | Tuesday, August 22, 2017

Expect nothing and you will enjoy everything. This sentence seems contradictory, but the idea it captures is one of the most meaningful nuggets of wisdom I’ve mined from my time at Notre Dame. It has the power to make the ordinary extraordinary, to make every day spectacular from the moment you hop out of bed,

Thoughts from a place of nostalgia

Caroline Humphreys | Tuesday, August 22, 2017

I sit here trying to write about love as I kill the ants crawling over my computer keys. I’m in Thailand, and seemed to confuse “simple” and “rustic” when looking to get away and unblock my chakras or whatever soul searching I had in mind. My friend Steph sits opposite me, applauding the mosquitoes she

Ranking presidents

Neil Joseph | Tuesday, February 21, 2017

Last week, C-SPAN released a ranking of every president by assembling a poll of a variety of historians. The ranking, which can be found here, had many controversial placements that liberals, conservatives, commentators and historians all found to be upsetting. Here’s what I think about a few of the rankings. No. 1 through No. 3 have been

Put things in perspective

Emily McConville | Thursday, November 20, 2014

The summer before my freshman year, a neighbor lent me a copy of the 1938 Dome yearbook. I spent a lunchtime looking at old pictures of the dining hall, the football team, the ads from long-gone South Bend businesses. I enjoyed looking at the idyllic representation of the University 75 years before I would set

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.

A glance at the ballot suggests that this year’s candidates all appear to be human and pro-democracy. This observation may seem obvious or nonsensical, but a look back at the history of SBP elections shows that pro-democracy ideals or even personhood are not characteristic of all candidates.
