On ‘The Record’: Supergroup Boygenius’ debut album

Anna Falk | Monday, April 17, 2023

Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker have made incredible music as individual artists. As the supergroup Boygenius, they are unstoppable. The trio had previously released a self-titled EP in 2018, a six-track collection of lyrically masterful, gut-wrenching ballads which was well-received by fans and critics alike. With their limited yet addictive discography, fans craved

Boygenius is back together and better than ever

Claire Lyons | Wednesday, February 8, 2023

In 2018, friends Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers sat down in the recording studio and started spitballing ideas. Their debut EP, “Boygenius,” was met with critical acclaim for both songwriting and sonic cohesion.  The self-titled debut album might ring some bells for people who have been paying attention to the music industry, but

‘From 2 to 3’: The ordinary turned extraordinary

Anna Falk | Tuesday, March 22, 2022

The evolution of a band and their music is one of the most fascinating things to see. Sometimes they evolve for the better, and other times for the worse. There are even times when a band’s evolution doesn’t do anything but make them more interesting. This area is where I see “From 2 to 3,”

‘Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You’: A double album that doesn’t feel like one

Matheus Herndl | Wednesday, February 23, 2022

It’s no secret that I have a thing for double albums. For me, double albums generally represent bands at the height of their creative ambitions and displaying the best of their technical skills. This is why records like Clash’s “London Calling” and Swans’ “Soundtracks for the Blind” are some of my all-time favorites, not only

Observer Wrapped: A peek into the musical tastes of student journalists

Aidan Thomas | Wednesday, January 19, 2022

A newsroom is an interesting place, and ours is no different. The Observer is made up of four different primary departments — Sports, News, Scene and Viewpoint — that work together to produce the content you all read. Despite their penchant for collaboration, though, writers for these various departments vary greatly in their interests and

Taylor Swift reclaims her magnum opus with ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’

John Clark | Monday, November 15, 2021

“Red,” in my humble opinion, was Taylor Swift’s magnum opus. The album was originally released at a critical point in my life, and one of my fondest memories is going to see Swift perform it on tour just a few weeks after burying my father. That concert brought me joy at a time when I

From Lana to Lorde: Why the internet hates the ‘sad girl gone glad’

Evan McKenna | Thursday, September 30, 2021

In the last decade or so, a new genre of celebrity has materialized in the realm of American pop culture — and maybe it says something about the state of our nation that this new form of fame is characterized almost exclusively by its deep, profound sadness. You know the type — a few of

Phoebe Bridgers: Don’t be a stranger to her music

Anna Falk | Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Just before the one year anniversary of her Grammy-nominated album “Punisher,” artist Phoebe Bridgers announced her upcoming North American tour. Tickets sold out almost instantly, and she certainly did not disappoint. Her Indianapolis stop, while originally scheduled for the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre, was held at the TCU Amphitheater at White River State

A Grammys recap

Ryan Israel | Monday, March 15, 2021

The 63rd annual Grammy Awards took place Sunday night, and if you weren’t paying attention — or just don’t care — it was easy to miss them. In a strange year for music devoid of any blockbuster moments, the Grammys didn’t have much draw. On top of that, the award show, like many other award

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
