Zwiller: New NFL powers emerge after Week 9

Thomas Zwiller | Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Going into Week 9, it felt like I had a solid feel for the NFL season. The Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the top-tier teams in the NFC. The AFC had the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers as their two top-tier teams. However, coming out of Week 9, I feel awfully

Aidan Thomas, Patrick Gallagher, Liam Coolican, Nate Moller and Dominic Gibson | Friday, October 23, 2020

Notre Dame is a Catholic university. But if there’s ever a time to believe in the football gods, it’s right now. Last week, sportswriter Patrick Gallagher hit on his fifth straight upset pick (underdogs of at least 7 points), with yet another double-digit underdog pulling through, as he continues to expand his lead on his

Becker: Bell managed holdout poorly

Courtney Becker | Monday, November 12, 2018

Well, Pittsburgh Steelers fans should be much happier with their current record of 6-2-1 than they were five weeks ago, when the team was at 1-2-1. In large part, the Steelers’ improvement is simply a product of them settling into the season and finding a rhythm — they usually have a few embarrassing stumbles at

Brizzolara: Le’Veon Bell should be praised, not ridiculed for holding out

Luke Brizzolara | Thursday, September 27, 2018

During the NFL Preseason, Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back Le’Veon Bell announced that he would not report to training camp, causing a ‘Twitterstorm’ and much public criticism —including from his own teammates. Through three weeks of the NFL regular season, Bell’s holdout continues to be one of the hottest topics in the NFL. Sports analysts and

Becker: Steelers needs to sort out off-the-field drama for on-the-field success

Courtney Becker | Monday, September 24, 2018

Have you been watching this season’s hottest new drama? It really has it all — infighting, shocking twists, complete breakdowns, temper tantrums, betrayals, the list goes on. It’s entertaining, thrilling or infuriating depending on your point of view. It’s called “The Pittsburgh Steelers.” Instead of starting 2-0 and leading the AFC North, as predicted, the

Greason: Here’s how to stop the Patriots

Elizabeth Greason | Friday, January 19, 2018

The New England Patriots are at it again— probably back to win another Super Bowl. And I’m tired of it. As a Giants fan, I’ve always had anything but love in my heart for Bill Bellichick’s gang, so this year more than ever I’ll be rooting actively for pretty much anyone else. So here are

Becker: Players should tone down celebrations

Courtney Becker | Tuesday, November 14, 2017

After establishing its reputation as the “No Fun League,” the NFL has loosened up its definition of what constitutes an excessive celebration, and players are taking full advantage of their increased freedom. I may be in the minority here, but I’m getting pretty sick of the NFL touchdown celebrations players have come up with this

Becker: Steelers fans should move on

Courtney Becker | Thursday, September 7, 2017

During The Observer’s fantasy football draft last week I drafted Arizona running back David Johnson second overall. The only reason I didn’t take Pittsburgh running back Le’Veon Bell is because our Editor-in-Chief, Ben Padanilam, took him first. The reason Bell is such a valuable asset on a fantasy football team is not only because he

In the wake of the University’s announcement of In the wake of the University’s announcement of Zahm House’s disbandment, The Observer began an investigation into the dorm’s so-called “troubling culture.”

The investigation revealed several incidents contributing to the administration’s decision, including Zahm residents’ disregard for and plans to alter COVID-19 tests as well as vandalism within and beyond the walls of the hall.

The Observer also obtained a series of email chains sent between roughly 200 Zahm residents from 2019-2020, in which students shared graphic and misogynistic jokes regarding sex and sexual assault.

After a week filled with virtual panels and a Yom After a week filled with virtual panels and a Yom Hashoah Holocaust Remembrance prayer service, today marks the final day of Antisemitism Awareness Week.

In light of the recent increase in antisemitism, the Jewish Club at Notre Dame organized this event to both engage and educate the community about combatting this type of hatred.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame’s student senate unanimously voted to pass Resolution SS 2021-37, which calls upon the University to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) non-legally binding working definition of antisemitism — one that has been embraced by nations, international organizations and universities across the world.

“One of the purposes of the working definition is that it’s hard to combat something if you can’t name it, or understand what it is and define it,” said Jewish Club president junior Bella Niforatos about the importance of adopting IHRA’s definition.

After Tuesday’s incident — where a group of non-ND affiliated people zoom-bombed one of the presentations — Jewish Club secretary sophomore Blake Ziegler said the club received an outpour of support from different members of the community. To create a more inclusive space, he said Notre Dame should actively embrace its Jewish members.

“The best way the Notre Dame community can show solidarity with the Jewish community is honestly just engagement, education, learning more about Judaism, engaging your Jewish friends and family, being open to listening to them and their concerns and addressing them,” he said.

After this week, Niforatos said there is one thing the Notre Dame community should remember: “If you have a voice, then you should use it.”

“Our goal for the fall semester will be to have as many members of the campus community vaccinated as possible, thereby reducing the risk of infection on campus and in the local community,” Jenkins said.

The University will respect documented medical and religious exemptions to the vaccine, according to the email.
