Colleen Fischer | Wednesday, March 3, 2021

There’s an interview with an aging Allen Ginsberg. I remember watching it as a teenager on my parents’ couch with the impossible close shot and indifference to what they are meant to be talking about when Ginsberg addresses something I had been wondering for years, “Why did so many of the beats die young?” He

Megan Fahrney | Tuesday, February 9, 2021

It all started with a packet of mustard on a table in South Dining Hall.  Club legend has it that before becoming Notre Dame’s official creative writing club, Mustard was an informal gathering of students interested in creative writing. A packet of mustard would be placed on a table in South Dining Hall before each

The indescribable undefinable most admirable passage of time The twisting listing constantly persisting reason for my rhyme It slips and slides, an eclipse of tides, holding me beneath the current Its pull provides unwanted guides to things that were or weren’t  Meant for silly little souls with facsimiles of goals that are surely set to

We criticize because we care

Evan McKenna | Thursday, August 27, 2020

I’m taking my first poetry writing class this semester. Aside from our discussions of avant-garde free-verse that go way over my head, we’ve been talking a lot about attention — what commands our attention, what other poets attend to in their writing and, most importantly, how we allocate our attention within the writing process.  One

Crows, quarantine and the ‘new normal’

Evan McKenna | Wednesday, April 15, 2020

I had only read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” once, but when a menacing black crow began ramming itself repeatedly into my bedroom window at 8:00 a.m. on a Monday morning, you bet I took notice of the poetic parallels.  Let me backtrack. It was a dreary, unassuming Monday morning — the beginning of my

Seeing the future through tea leaves and book titles

Gabriel Niforatos | Wednesday, April 8, 2020

Let me tell you a story. It was a yawning New Mexican evening, the desert breeze running its fingers delicately through our living room blinds and the last spears of golden light playing across the tiled floor. My computer sat in front of me, a blank page glaring at me as I thought of what

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.
