To PC or not to PC

Alexa Schlaerth | Friday, January 28, 2022

When we discuss politically correct, or “PC” language, we inherently examine the culture and/or movements that have created the new and more progressive terminology. How do we approach topics like these while maintaining our values of tolerance, acceptance, equality and free speech? Generally speaking, the terms in this prompt reflect a trend toward non-gendered language:

Is political correctness correct?

Show Some Skin | Wednesday, December 6, 2017

Often, what comes before assertion is evasion. In the past few years, I have gradually learned to avoid making controversial claims along racial, religious and gendered lines, to name a few. Donald Trump and politcal correctness

Eddie Damstra | Wednesday, October 12, 2016

There is a severe political correctness problem in America. Safe spaces, trigger warnings and microaggressions are constructs utilized to suppress free speech and prevent meaningful discussion. However, such absurd creations are simply tangible representations of the aggressively pervasive aura of political correctness in America. Political correctness is not just a problem facing college campuses, but

Neil Joseph | Monday, March 21, 2016

The campaign for the 2016 presidential election has been defined by candidates on both sides criticizing facets of American society that we see today. The disintegration of family values, the social liberalism (or conservatism) of many Americans, the inability to have civilized dialogue, the list goes on and on. One of the biggest problems that

‘You do you, bro’: South Park’s critique of political correctness and the cult of the self

Charlie Ducey | Monday, November 9, 2015

Comedy Central’s “South Park,” now in its 19th season, has made a name for itself largely through lowbrow vulgarity and gratuitous violence that constantly pushes the envelope of acceptability. One need look no further than the preponderance of animated feces, vomit and entrails in “South Park” to cast doubt on the cultural value of such a

‘South Park’: still king of rationality

Miko Malabute | Thursday, September 17, 2015

How does a show, extending into its 19th season, manage to stay so successful and popular? Well, it continually tackles the latest, most controversial topics talked about across America and doesn’t apologize for its social commentary. It’s no secret that, while we as a society have grown more culturally sensitive and politically correct for the better,

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
