Senate votes against banning pornography on University Wi-Fi

Liam Kelly | Thursday, March 9, 2023

On Wednesday evening, the Notre Dame student senate voted against a resolution to ban pornography on the University WiFi network. The resolution, SS 2223-15, was introduced by Morrissey Hall senator John Soza, Siegfried Hall senator Ayden Ellis, Sorin College senator Bobby Spence and Badin Hall senator Caroline Potts.  Speaking in favor of his resolution, Soza

University President rejected our request for a porn filter

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Fr. John Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, recently decided to cover murals of Christopher Columbus because they were deemed too offensive to be viewed by Notre Dame students. One week later, he rejected a student petition calling for a pornography filter on Notre Dame’s Wi-Fi. We are dumbfounded. Does the University of Notre Dame really believe

A small part of the problem

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, November 14, 2018

“Pornography is only a small part of the problem.” I am a 1974 graduate of Notre Dame. I have subscribed to the email version of The Observer since it first became available. I read with interest in the Viewpoint section “The Men of Notre Dame request a porn filter” as well as, the follow-up “Women of

Pornography: it’s time to talk about it

Campus Ministry | Monday, October 8, 2018

“Can I ask you a very direct question? Do you struggle with using pornography?” In my role in Campus Ministry, I have asked this question several times over the past year. Each time I asked, the respondent simply said “yeah.” I ask not to shame or guilt the responder, but to bring out into the

Why look at porn?

Christopher Damian | Monday, October 26, 2015

Notre Dame students look at porn. It’s just a fact. In 2013, I conducted a very informal survey of more than 400 Notre Dame students on pornography use. Sixty-three percent of men and 11 percent of women admitted to viewing porn while on campus. I don’t know entirely what to do with this fact. I don’t

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
