Get it done early

Mikey Colgan | Wednesday, September 14, 2022

Class ends and it’s 4:30. I just had a long day and the last thing I want to do is work out. I’m tired, there’s homework I have to do and I want to stop by my friends’ room and shoot the breeze. So then I think to myself: I only need to workout four

Killing time

Andrew Sveda | Monday, April 6, 2020

These past few weeks have been, well, hard, to say the least. All of us have had something important to us taken away by COVID-19. But with all of us (hopefully) at home, we’ve gained something we’re always asking for: time. Yet now that we have it, we have absolutely no clue what to do

How to save your soul by doing nothing

Cristina Interiano | Thursday, October 3, 2019

The title of this column is incredibly misleading, but ultimately, I want to share two ideas I came across recently that have shaped my perspective on how to live and spend my time. The first one I heard in a podcast called “The Fr. Mike Schmitz Catholic Podcast” where Fr. Mike discusses different life and

Mastering the art of procrastination

Cate Von Dohlen | Thursday, February 7, 2019

Procrastination is often shamed. Sometimes we internally shame ourselves at 2 a.m. on Monday mornings. Other times, we sense the silent shame on the upper levels of Club Hes. Nevertheless, just the word itself has negative connotations — but I like to think procrastination can actually be beneficial. There is a certain art to procrastinating,

A reflection on procrastination

Sara Schlecht | Tuesday, April 24, 2018

In trying to come up with ideas for this Inside Column, I drew a blank. Repeatedly. So in order to have something to fill this space, I asked several friends what I should write. The answers were varied, some realistic, others ridiculous or reflective. So in lieu of coming up with my own idea (cut

Finals procrastination

Nicole Caratas | Tuesday, May 2, 2017

With finals quickly approaching, you can be sure to find me, in bed, for 14 hours a day, with a stack of reading that I didn’t keep up with, trying really hard to pretend like I don’t pay thousands of dollars a semester just to procrastinate. With a research project and paper due this upcoming

McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: Don’t worry, it’s not a bottomless pit of procrastinatory doom.

Mike Donovan | Tuesday, November 1, 2016

It’s 1 a.m. at Club Hes. You’ve been in the intellectual trenches for several hours now, toiling away as the shadow of the coming exam looms over your stress-ridden head. You contemplate a study break — some relaxing and mindless activity to grant reprieve — but quickly turn the idea down. Netflix, YouTube and the

Finals week procrastination guide

Miko Malabute | Tuesday, April 28, 2015

So here we are once again: finals week. The time where you buckle down, become super efficient, freshen up on a semester’s worth of material, constantly pour over old exams and quizzes and lectures and … well, if you’re anything like me the thought of it all is truly daunting. So, if you’re anything like

Putting off stress

Brian Lach | Monday, February 16, 2015

“Still watching?” I don’t appreciate the judgmental attitude Netflix is using with me. I click the “Continue watching” button. “It’s been a long week,” I think. And surely, watching all eight seasons of “Dexter” is far more important than my business coursework. An unspoken rule states that for every hour of homework you have, there are

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
