Genevieve Coleman | Wednesday, September 29, 2021

This year’s annual Christian Culture Lecture featured author Jacqueline Woodson, who spoke on the power literature has on children and participated in a question-and-answer session with College President Katie Conboy. Conboy introduced Woodson, who as a child, was known to write on places such as on walls and in books that would get her in trouble

Notes from a recovering English major

Nelisha Silva | Monday, August 30, 2021

I love to read. It’s my favorite form of entertainment, over watching TV or movies, or listening to podcasts. I’ve always loved to read. My mom loves to tell me that I was an easy kid because all I did was read books quietly in the corner. I was definitely that weird kid in elementary

The books still on my shelf

Sara Schlecht | Monday, March 30, 2020

Having been forcibly returned to my childhood bedroom for the rest of the semester, I am now surrounded by the possessions not deemed worthy of getting rid of quite yet but also not so essential to my life to be in my beloved room in Le Mans Hall. Most of these are books — some

Mary Pope Osborne, I hope you’re reading this

Evan McKenna | Thursday, January 23, 2020

If you were to ask my parents to recount any memories they have of my second grade experience, they might have a tough time digging up any stories. Why, you ask? Holding back tears, my mother might explain to you why I went off the grid that year: “When Evan was seven, he locked himself

The optimistic reader

Ellen Geyer | Wednesday, January 30, 2019

I have always loved reading. Growing up, I always had a book in my hand, tearing through them as if reading was the last thing I would ever do. As a relatively quiet kid, I loved the way books made me feel, and to me, there were no friends better than the ones I found

For the fun of it

Ann Curtis | Wednesday, January 23, 2019

If being a full-time student, working two jobs and having a sliver of a social life has taught me anything, it is how to manage my time efficiently and effectively. I treasure those rare moments when I look at empty spots on my calendar and think “Wow! What in the world am I going to

Our final chapter

Joe Everett | Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Imagine you’re reading a really great book. It’s full of excitement, drama and wit with loads of development throughout. It’s engaging and fun and lovely — a real page-turner. You fly through the book, drinking in every word and falling deep into the contents of its pages, unaware of how quickly you are progressing through

The death and resurrection of poetry

Sara Schlecht | Tuesday, September 11, 2018

When I was a freshman in high school, my English teacher killed poetry for me. Just as Romeo poisoned himself and Juliet stabbed herself with a dagger, my teacher slaughtered the art form as she stressed the importance of stressed syllables in iambic pentameter. The following few years were filled with agony as teachers asked

A magical tradition

Courtney Becker | Monday, August 28, 2017

For the past 10 years I’ve had the same summer tradition. Every year, as soon as July rolls around, I pick up “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” and make my way steadily through the seven books that still amaze me even after reading them so many times. It all started in 2007, when I

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
