Fuel your fire

Joey Jegier | Friday, March 24, 2023

In one of my first counseling sessions with Dr. Mermelstein, he asked me, “Joey, what makes you tick?” Although I lacked an answer at the time, that question sparked an ember in my heart, prompting me to search for meaning and purpose. Thus, I pose this question to you today. What fuels your fire? No

The poetry of Bdelloid rotifers

Renee Yaseen | Thursday, April 14, 2022

Imagine a creature that lives 24,000 years, encased in Siberian permafrost. Deprive it of water, oxygen or heat, subject it to extreme radiation or scores of deadly pathogens and its response will be the same: it will swiftly dehydrate itself — losing nearly all the water in its body — and curl up for a nice

A man of the people

Mikey Colgan | Tuesday, March 15, 2022

During spring break, I was lucky to be able to spend some time with my grandfather, George Dargati, or Poppy, as I call him. After some long conversations and many laughs over meals with him and some of my family, I learned many invaluable lessons that are especially applicable to the Notre Dame community. George

My five minute journal

Claire Kirner | Wednesday, February 2, 2022

I recently started using “The Five Minute Journal” almost solely off of seeing Emma Watson recommend one in a Youtube video, which I guess says something about me and my love for Harry Potter (that still exists after all this time). According to the journal, you are supposed to write in it every day for

Don’t live for lasts

Abby Patrick | Monday, December 6, 2021

I’ve been thinking a lot about lasts lately. So have my friends. As a senior, it’s pretty natural to be at least a little preoccupied by endings — they’re everywhere. Last football games as students, last fall semester, last Christmastime on campus, last day of classes, even. I think the fall-to-winter switch lends itself to

The Notre Dame difference

Wei Lin | Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Over the summer, I trekked downtown to New York City with my friend to visit the school I attended prior to coming here, Stuyvesant High School. It was a very competitive high school, officially known as a specialized high school in New York City and, to many others, a feeder school for the Ivies. The

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
