The effect of disinformation on religious freedom

Blake Ziegler | Thursday, September 8, 2022

When the truth is as flexible as rubber, the stability of democracy isn’t far behind. Disinformation is a fundamental threat to the democratic world. Hallmarks of democracy, such as the free and open exchange of ideas and our institutions, rest on the assumption that our society is committed to the pursuit of truth. This is

The unexpected directions of the Holy Spirit

Devin Humphreys | Monday, September 5, 2022

In a prior column, I wrote about times in my spiritual journey where the voice of our Heavenly Father has been clear (mostly in telling me I need to read the Psalms more frequently). And while it’s true that there are times where God speaks with what St. Ignatius would call a “clarity beyond doubt,” those

Real sinner, real grace

Andrew Sveda | Monday, April 4, 2022

“If you are a preacher of grace, then preach real and not fake grace,” Martin Luther wrote in a letter to Philipp Melanchthon in 1521. “If grace is true, then you must bear true and not false sin. God does not save those who are only fake sinners. Be a sinner — believing and rejoicing

Beyond tolerance

Renee Yaseen | Thursday, March 31, 2022

My 2020 column “Food for Faith: What it’s Like Being Muslim at Notre Dame” prompted more kind emails, warm and fuzzy direct messages, conversion attempts and pranks than any other article I’ve written. I’m serious, my inbox was pinging for weeks. I’ve been thinking about why that article resonated so much with people, particularly with Catholics. In it, I

The next head coach and the Notre Dame charism

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, December 2, 2021

Dear students,  I have a secret. Not few of your professors, including this one, pay a lot of attention to sports. I rejoice when I have students on the hockey team, soccer teams and both basketball teams. Your joys are my joys. Your sorrows are my sorrows.  Now, I’m a weird professor. I teach at Notre

‘Hellbound’: Fate or something more

Rachel Hartmann | Wednesday, December 1, 2021

In “Hellbound,” the world is thrown into chaos when huge, terrifying demons appear and drag sinners to hell. These demons appear on the date and time specified by a mythical creature who appeared to the sinners before. As these demons appear more and more, religious extremism grows as individuals call these events the will of

The right side of history

Andrew Sveda | Monday, November 8, 2021

Politicians love to talk about the “right” and “wrong side of history.” It is quite powerful imagery, after all, and is a strong invocation of moral authority. But boiled down to its simplest form, the phrase effectively says, “The future is on my side. In 50 or even 20 years, all will utterly reject your

Hosted by Campus Ministry, the event encourages students to pursue whatever faith they connect with, from Catholicism to Judaism. Fr. Pete McCormick, director

A true Catholic education

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, March 9, 2021

Growing up, I spent most of my time learning about the world in two rooms: my church sanctuary, and my living room, with the TV tuned to MSNBC. Religion and politics have always been a part of my life, but they were always completely unrelated. I’d hear my minister mention something about racial justice, or

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
