‘Hellbound’: Fate or something more

Rachel Hartmann | Wednesday, December 1, 2021

In “Hellbound,” the world is thrown into chaos when huge, terrifying demons appear and drag sinners to hell. These demons appear on the date and time specified by a mythical creature who appeared to the sinners before. As these demons appear more and more, religious extremism grows as individuals call these events the will of

The right side of history

Andrew Sveda | Monday, November 8, 2021

Politicians love to talk about the “right” and “wrong side of history.” It is quite powerful imagery, after all, and is a strong invocation of moral authority. But boiled down to its simplest form, the phrase effectively says, “The future is on my side. In 50 or even 20 years, all will utterly reject your

An invitation to celebrate Sukkot

Letter to the Editor | Friday, September 24, 2021

The Jewish Club is pleased to invite members of the Notre Dame community to celebrate Sukkot with us this weekend! Sukkot is a seven-day harvest festival in Judaism and marks the end of the agricultural year in the Land of Israel, the ancestral and religious home of the Jewish people. The holiday is a time

Roughly 40 student groups set up and decorated stands throughout South Quad to connect with students of all different faiths as part of the University’s annual “Feed Your Faith” event Wednesday evening. A true Catholic education

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, March 9, 2021

Growing up, I spent most of my time learning about the world in two rooms: my church sanctuary, and my living room, with the TV tuned to MSNBC. Religion and politics have always been a part of my life, but they were always completely unrelated. I’d hear my minister mention something about racial justice, or

‘Saint Maud’ offers a unique vision of religious horror

Justin George | Friday, February 19, 2021

The world of horror is rife with films that play upon religious imagery, many of which are derivative of classics such as “The Exorcist” and “Rosemary’s Baby.” Going in, I was worried that “Saint Maud” might feel contrived or familiar much like many other films in this genre. I could not have been more wrong.

What I’m giving up for Lent

Gabriel Niforatos | Friday, February 19, 2021

This Lent, I’ve decided to give up meat. I could tell you that my body is a temple and that I want to be a healthy, disciplined person or that I oppose inhumane violence against God’s creation. For 40 days, I’m going to sacrifice and eat fish and broccoli from the dining hall, and maybe

Food for faith: what it’s like to be Muslim at Notre Dame

Renee Yaseen | Monday, October 26, 2020

I decided on Notre Dame after I attended a summer program here in 2017. There, I went to my first mass, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. There was a paper booklet with music in it, and a group of friends by my side in the pew. When it came time to take the

I can’t

Andrew Sveda | Tuesday, October 6, 2020

If you had 60 seconds to deliver a message to the entire world, what would you say? This was the premise of an international competition last May. I thought about entering it, but I just couldn’t find the words. I thought of all the one-liners and words of encouragement I’ve heard since March, and then

And that’s on idolatry

Ashton Weber | Tuesday, September 22, 2020

Oh my God. If you, like me, were raised with the Ten Commandments drilled into your head since elementary school, this statement may have caused you to think, “No, Ashton! You meant to say, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain, remember?” For years, I corrected people with a similar

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
