More respect than rivalry

Dennis Nemenz | Monday, October 26, 2015

A few weeks ago, our son invited my wife and I to accompany him to the Notre Dame versus Navy football game in South Bend. We were anticipating a full-fledged, if not closely contested, college football rivalry. What we experienced was much, much more, culminating in a day replete with hope, gratitude and pride —

What’s good? Women supporting women

Jennifer Vosters | Thursday, September 24, 2015

It could have been a comedy: celebrity No. 1 dishes about celebrity No. 2 in an interview; celebrity No. 2 calls out celebrity No. 1 on live television (with celebrity No. 3 cheering in the background); America celebrates. Except it was the VMAs (which could be classified as a comedy based on the outfits), and celebrity No. 1 was Miley

Show respect to all legends

Letter to the Editor | Monday, November 10, 2014

It is with a great deal of respect for your university and athletic program that I write this letter. As an alum, and now retired staff member, of Arizona State University (ASU) I enjoy not only the pride that we have in our academic institution but also respect that held by counterparts who claim the

The N-word: think before you speak

Sarah Morris | Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Approach others with respect, trust

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, April 10, 2014

While I disagree with much of Mark Gianfalla’s recent column, “The campus that cries wolf,” one line especially troubles me. It is, I suggest, indicative of a deeper problem with Gianfella’s reasoning in general. Ginafalla writes: “The ‘I, Too, Am Notre Dame’ photo blog, which accuses members of the Notre Dame student body of being

Find out what it means to me

Mia Lillis | Monday, March 17, 2014

“Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone.” Malcolm X. Respect. A word most often associated with Aretha Franklin, respect can go by many other names in our society such as politeness, deference, courtesy, etiquette, reverence and obedience, to name a few. Respect is by and large considered to be a necessity in most

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
