‘We have but this one short life’: ‘Fire of Love’ sizzles at DPAC

Mark Valenzuela | Monday, September 5, 2022

When the unnatural destruction of France during World War II subsided, Katia and Maurice Krafft stepped out of the flames. Although they would not meet for another two decades, the couple experienced a mutual childhood ignition — the love of volcanoes sparked that within them.  Brilliantly juxtaposing the unnatural flames of human war with grandiose

‘Guess why I smile a lot. Uh, cause it’s worth it.’

Annie Brown | Wednesday, August 31, 2022

Propelled seemingly by some mechanism inside its rubber body, a tennis ball rolls, turns and erratically bounces down the stairs, eventually coming to rest near the couch.  The ball is a little tattered, as if it has been rolled down these stairs many times before and the viewer is simply looking in on a daily

The nuances of ‘Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers’

Andy Ottone | Wednesday, August 31, 2022

Before reviewing Disney’s “Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers,” let’s take a look at one specific scene. At one point the titular duo gets cornered during an attempted locker room heist by a DJ, who also happens to be a snake. To distract from their theft, Chip and Dale freestyle rap about how they do not

The chiaroscuro of ‘Elvis’

Ayden Kowalski | Friday, August 26, 2022

The world of Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is, curiously, often painted with dimmed colors. Yes, when the King of Rock inevitably enters Vegas, there is the expected bombast, but most of this world is gray, such as Elvis’ large concert completing the first two stages of his career, where the show appears smokey and the lights

The fall of Saul: A Jimmy McGill character study

Meg Sluzas | Friday, August 26, 2022

Summer 2022 began and ended with “Better Call Saul.” The final season sucked me in with character development that only Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould can deliver. The series takes Saul Goodman, a character who mainly serves as comic relief in “Breaking Bad,” and deepens him into a man who masks his true nature to

‘Hellfire’: Black Midi’s descent into madness

Matheus Herndl | Friday, August 26, 2022

Over the last few years, the British underground rock scene has proven itself to be one the most creative and influential in the indie music sphere, producing bands like Black Country, New Road, Squid and Dry Cleaning, which have all put out some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 2020s. At the forefront

Netflix’s ‘Persuasion’: You cannot persuade me to like this

Rose Androwich | Friday, August 26, 2022

Netflix made a mistake in releasing this 2022 adaptation of the classic written by Jane Austen. It has been universally acknowledged by Jane Austen fans, like myself, that it is not a good film. Comparing it to the original novel and other adaptations makes it fall incredibly short. “Persuasion” is a frustrating film because it

The contagious social commentary of “All of Us Are Dead”

JP Spoonmore | Tuesday, February 8, 2022

When watching foreign shows, the creators’ culture often dilutes in translation. But Netflix’s newest original, “All of Us Are Dead,” goes above and beyond to keep South Korean culture at its core. This webtoon-inspired show explores every socioeconomic angle of the stress-ridden life of South Korean high schoolers. Test scores and bullying are bad enough,

‘And Just Like That…’ is just not it

Reyna Lim | Friday, February 4, 2022

[Editor’s Note: Spoilers ahead.] Television revivals are tricky. Streaming services have allowed us to revisit old favorites in new, high-definition productions, but a well-executed revival is rare to come by. Two of my comfort shows faced rude awakenings with recent revivals. The new “Gossip Girl” soiled the show’s name with subpar acting and plotlines. “Gilmore

‘Much Ado About Nothing’ enters modernity

Rose Androwich | Tuesday, February 1, 2022

“Much Ado About Nothing” — performed by the Actors From The London Stage at Notre Dame’s own Washington Hall on Jan. 26 — contained exceptional acting from the cast of five, all of whom took on multiple roles. Said cast included William Donaldsen, who played Claudio, Borachio, Antonio and Margaret; Chris Donnelly as Don Pedro,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
