Rihanna shined like a ‘diamond’ during halftime show

Ayden Kowalski | Tuesday, February 14, 2023

The Super Bowl Halftime Show is a nearly impossible task: crunch a discography of globally recognized anthems into thirteen minutes with incredibly complex choreography, iconic stage design and a moment that will remain imprinted on the American consciousness. On top of that, one must do this in an extremely normative manner. Since Jay-Z has partnered

Ward: Ranking celebrity sports spectators

Jimmy Ward | Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Spectators. Fanfare. It’s half of what makes sports awesome. The roar of the crowd, the gasps of anticipation — they all make sports worth watching. You have the diehard fans, the group that shows up to every single game, rain or snow. And then you have the celebrity fans –– some are bandwagoners and some

The best of Drake

Ryan Israel | Monday, March 30, 2020

Drake is the most ubiquitous, influential and popular music artist of the past decade. Drake is The Beatles. He has plenty of flaws — Google ghostwriters, hiding a child and more — and some really not great music. He’s also had some stellar feature appearances, outstanding songs and a few good albums. To stir up

Two Friends’s ‘Big Bootie Mix, Volume 15’ is a major letdown

Ryan Israel | Friday, April 5, 2019

A classical piano plays a familiar melody. A comforting voice begins to sing, “Mama, just killed a man / Put a gun against his head / Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead.” It’s Freddie Mercury; this is “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a classic rock song long launched back into popular culture by the historically inaccurate, self-aggrandizing Queen

Darn, these features are good

Erin McAuliffe and Jack Riedy | Thursday, April 20, 2017

Kendrick Lamar has an iconic discography — so iconic that it somehow manages to stay unmarred by his shaky collaboration history. Taylor Swift, Adam Levine, Robin Thicke and Imagine Dragons all successfully recruited him for their tracks — we couldn’t have composed a more unfortunate list if we tried. However, on “DAMN.” Lamar has total

Jimmy Kemper, Erin McAuliffe, John Darr, Kelly McGarry, Christian Bunker, Adrian Mark Lore, Brian Boylen, Adam Ramos, Mike Donovan, Jack Riedy and Maggie Walsh | Wednesday, December 7, 2016

A Tribe Called Quest — “We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service” By Adrian Mark Lore Suffice it to say that 2016 was a turbulent year, both domestically and internationally. For the music industry, it was a year of sad departures — the death of legends like David Bowie and Leonard Cohen— as well

‘The Life of Pablo’ review

Erin McAuliffe | Thursday, February 18, 2016

“The Life of Pablo,” Kanye West’s seventh album, is not regular. The album fluxes without floundering. It is powerfully disjointed in celebration and reconciliation. West begs for absolution, exalts in corporeal consecration and, as usual, demands recognition. In “The Life of Pablo,” he’s justified. From his apprehensions about religious rap on 2004’s “Jesus Walks” to

Artistic Divergence: A look at how the art landscape is being transformed

Bobby Wozniak | Tuesday, February 16, 2016

The seamless fusion of music, fashion and performance art that was the Yeezy Season 3 showcase/”The Life Of Pablo” album release/Vanessa Beecroft piece undeniably changed the traditional concept of art. Say what you will about the inexplicable yet ingenious Kanye West, but his Madison Square Garden show raised the bar and transformed expectations for what it

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
