Tame Impala resurrects with ‘The Slow Rush’

Renee Pierson | Wednesday, February 19, 2020

After five years of miserable dormancy, Tame Impala has returned with a matured sound on its fourth LP, “The Slow Rush.” Frontman Kevin Parker guides us through a psychedelic journey from past to future, even framing the album with songs titled “One More Year” and “One More Hour” to further emphasize the overarching theme of

They’re Not Sell-Outs, Just Hypocrites

Willoughby Thom | Monday, February 10, 2020

Before going on to review the new Green Day album, which was released Friday, I would like to take immediate action and retract the statement I made on Sept. 16, 2019: “Green Day’s new path is disappointingly weird, and we are not in for a treat.” In September of last year, Green Day fans received news of

Bridgers, Oberst gel on ‘Better Oblivion Community Center’

Matthew Kellenberg | Wednesday, January 30, 2019

Things are looking up for Phoebe Bridgers. In 2017, she released her debut album, “Strangers in the Alps,” to critical acclaim. A year later, her collaboration with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, “boygenius,” received album-of-the-year buzz. Also in this time, Bridgers joined indie darling and former Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst on his “Salutations” European

Daughters adventures through abstract, nihilistic soundscapes on ‘You Won’t Get What You Want’

Patrick Witteman | Monday, November 12, 2018

Up until the release of “You Won’t Get What You Want,” the Rhode Island band Daughters had been somewhat removed from the music scene. Their last release came in 2010 with the self-titled album “Daughters,” and the album preceding that was released in 2006. More often than not, when bands take long hiatuses between two

Winding roads and reverie on ISLAND’s debut album

Lauren Weldon | Wednesday, April 18, 2018

The first time I listened to Oxford-formed, London-based four-piece ISLAND, I was driving north along the winding Olympic Peninsula of Washington. Maybe it was the narrowly turning, tree-lined highway or maybe it was the ocean’s mist that can engulf cars and suspend any sense of seasonality, but when the track “Stargazer” off their 2015 debut

‘All Nerve’ is a solid return from lengthy hiatus

Owen Lane | Tuesday, March 20, 2018

In 2018, the definition of music continues to expand. Even hip-hop music, once the edgiest genre of music and considered abrasive and threatening to middle-class American values, has become the dominant popular musical genre, complete with an endless queue of traditionalists complaining about the genre’s unpleasant new direction. So, what can a rock band even

Anna Burch’s letter from an abandoned zoo

Mike Donovan | Thursday, February 8, 2018

Peering through the mangled segment of fencing, her veins run cold. From a distance, the overgrown vines and bushes looked manageable. But here, alongside the century-old crumbling remnants of the zoo — once the gem of Belle Isle — the weeds posture monstrously above her. “I’ll give you a lift,” he offers. She obliges,

Greta Van Fleet’s ‘From the Fires’ is a fantastic tribute to classic rock

Ryan Israel | Monday, November 20, 2017

The era of rock ’n’ roll passed long ago. The legendary rock music produced by bands like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and The Who is played sparingly and enjoyed by an older generation. The rockstars of today are far different from the ones that once jammed out on guitars and drums. Modern-day music icons

Gender, rock and the ‘Misfit Society’

Mike Donovan | Thursday, November 9, 2017

A girl goes to a garage sale. In the corner, next to a pile of old clothes and a shady-looking blender, she finds her ticket to euphoria — a fantastical vehicle that translates her innermost thoughts for a world that desperately needs them. She buys the CASIO. Several years later, the CASIO sits among a

Cure writer’s block with ‘Lotta Sea Lice’

Mike Donovan | Friday, October 27, 2017

Writing sucks. As deadlines approach, I reach into the cavernous vestibules of my idle brain, shine a feeble light onto its damp walls and find nothing. My phone pings, sending up a dopamine flare. For the next 30 minutes, memes captivate my world. The clock ticks. I return to my documents, beat out a few

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
