An open letter to professor Amy Coney Barrett

Letter to the Editor | Friday, October 9, 2020

As your colleague at Notre Dame, I respectfully request that you withdraw your nomination to be a U.S. Supreme Court judge. These are extremely divisive times, and as University President Fr. John Jenkins and many others have noted, we need to do everything we can to reduce polarization and divisions. Unfortunately, though you are qualified

Amy Coney Barrett is no RBG

Krista Lourdes Akiki | Friday, October 2, 2020

“When you grow up as a girl, it is like there are faint chalk lines traced approximately three inches around your entire body at all times, drawn by society and often religion and family and particularly other women, who somehow feel invested in how you behave…” — E. Thomas. Being a woman presents numerous challenges, some

The Supreme Court is not your friend

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, September 29, 2020

The moment news broke of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, I was, unfortunately, on Twitter. As I processed the implications of this news, I watched my entire timeline do the same, in real time. First came the emotional reactions from those who idolized her, then the backlash highlighting the more conservative parts of

Ginsburg, McConnell and the death of political norms

Vince Mallett | Friday, September 25, 2020

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is accusing Senate Republicans of employing “brute political force.” Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham is implying that after the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, he doesn’t trust Senate Democrats to respect institutional norms. In the wake of the sudden death of one of the most iconic figures in the 21st century American

A letter to Justice Ginsburg

Eva Analitis | Monday, September 21, 2020

Dear Justice Ginsburg, My heart dropped on Friday when I heard of your passing. Just a day earlier, I had been listening to your voice in a recording of the oral arguments for Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin while working on a project. You were a constant force in our nation: a reliable,

A reflection on the death of a great woman and a great judge

Letter to the Editor | Monday, September 21, 2020

The only public figure I have ever idolized is Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I have two pair of RBG earrings (one of her face and one of just the dissent collar). I have RBG socks, T-shirts, a mug and even — in 2020 — masks. Rather ironically, I even have two Christmas ornaments of the late

‘On the Basis of Sex’ brings Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s early years to life

Hanna Kennedy | Thursday, January 17, 2019

Following closely behind the release of the documentary “RBG” in May, “On the Basis of Sex” is the latest installment filmmakers have provided to satisfy society’s unusual enthusiasm for the 5-foot-1 Supreme Court justice. The two-hour film’s opening image is a flood of Harvard men marching through the streets of Cambridge when among them appears

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
