Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb had just announced an order to end in-person dining, and, days later, a stay-at-home mandate would go into effect. After a few months

Scene in South Bend: Pinellia Vegan Asian

Mariah Rush | Tuesday, January 22, 2019

On the northeast side of South Bend — inching towards Mishawaka but still a ten minute drive from Notre Dame’s campus — rests an Asian takeout restaurant offering selections ranging from Korean to Japanese and Chinese cuisine. Restaurants of this nature are relatively common in Midwestern cities, but Pinellia Vegan Asian comes with an added

Scene in South Bend: Mango Café

Kay Bontempo | Thursday, November 29, 2018

When I tell people that some of the best empanadas I’ve ever had were in South Bend, just across from Martin’s, they’re inevitably skeptical. Most people don’t think of it as a town with a wide array of ethnic food. But in defense of the Bend, I lived in Manhattan for 18 years without visiting

Carlos De Loera | Wednesday, November 28, 2018

Looking at all the places featured in Scene in South Bend articles, there seemed to be a general trend: People (myself included) were not visiting the West Side of South Bend. But why is this? I think part of it is that there has been a lot of revitalization going on in Downtown South Bend,

Nora McGreevy and Margaret McGreevy | Friday, September 14, 2018

Crooked Ewe’s logo — the face of a Scottish blackface sheep, with bright red eyes and menacing horns — has provoked more than a few questions from customers, executive chef Alain Helfrich says. Usually, the question falls along the lines of, “Don’t only male sheep have horns?” As it turns out, in this particular species, both male

“I don’t have an official title,” Jacob Titus told us before grudgingly referring to himself as the “owner” of West.SB. All three of us — Titus, Scene Editor Adam Ramos and Associate Scene Editor Nora McGreevy — were seated in a pristine white room, one of many new office spaces in the renovated Studebaker Building 113

Scene in South Bend: Fiddler’s Hearth

Mike Donovan | Friday, November 3, 2017

Experts position the Basque region of Spain at the forefront of progressive cuisine — lauding the region’s charismatic forays into gastronomic experimentation. Anthony Bourdain contends, “You could make the argument that there’s no better place to eat in Europe than the city of San Sebastian.” Notice that Bourdain says Europe and not The World. He

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
