Coolican: ‘They wrote me off, I ain’t write back:’ Smith, rookies lead Seattle resurgence

Liam Coolican | Thursday, November 3, 2022

“They wrote me off, I ain’t write back though,” Geno Smith said after the Seattle Seahawks’ 17-16 victory over the Denver Broncos to open the season.  The quote, which instantly reverberated throughout the NFL landscape, certainly is true of Smith, but it also applies to the entire Seahawks team. After trading franchise quarterback Russell Wilson

Zwiller: Week Five Overreactions

Thomas Zwiller | Tuesday, October 12, 2021

Let’s overreact to NFL Week Five… Carolina Panthers Claim: Sam Darnold is broken. He looked like a new quarterback through the first three weeks of the season, prompting David Newton to write an article called “Carolina Panthers successfully exorcising Sam Darnold’s ghosts from NY Jets.” However, in weeks four and five, Darnold threw a combined six

Zwiller: From Division champs to 1-2

Thomas Zwiller | Wednesday, September 29, 2021

At the start of the season, had you told me that the Jacksonville Jaguars would be 0-3, I would have believed you. I would not have believed you if you told me the Kansas City Chiefs went 1-2 in their first three games.  The Chiefs are not the only surprise of the season, of course.

Zwiller: Let’s overreact 2.0

Thomas Zwiller | Monday, September 20, 2021

Last week I wrote about the crazy opening weekend: The Titans’ crazy game against the Cardinals, the Browns’ great showing against the Chiefs, the Saints rolling the Packers and the Steelers locking down the Bills.  I think I did pretty well. The Titans’ offense bounced back against the Seattle Seahawks, and the Browns seem to

Zwiller: What’s next for Russell Wilson?

Thomas Zwiller | Monday, March 1, 2021

My plan for this week had been to turn my attention to the NBA. The second half of the season was just released, and the All-Star Game signaled the season’s halfway point. I thought it could be fun to make picks for the postseason, but all that changed when Russell Wilson asked to leave Seattle.

Zwiller: New NFL powers emerge after Week 9

Thomas Zwiller | Wednesday, November 11, 2020

Going into Week 9, it felt like I had a solid feel for the NFL season. The Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the top-tier teams in the NFC. The AFC had the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers as their two top-tier teams. However, coming out of Week 9, I feel awfully

Observer Roundtable: ND-Clemson, Cocktail Party and Michigan looking to rebound

Nate Moller, Patrick Gallagher, Aidan Thomas, Liam Coolican and Dominic Gibson | Friday, November 6, 2020

Last week saw a lot of blowouts, and as such, upset picks were difficult to come by. None of our writers successfully notched an upset prediction, leading to a low scoring week. For the second straight week, Nate Moller was our highest scorer, collecting nine of 12 possible points outside the upset prediction. He’s challenging

Observer Roundtable Week 6: Three top-25 duels, undefeated NFL teams highlight weekend

Aidan Thomas, Patrick Gallagher, Liam Coolican, Nate Moller and Dominic Gibson | Friday, October 23, 2020

Notre Dame is a Catholic university. But if there’s ever a time to believe in the football gods, it’s right now. Last week, sportswriter Patrick Gallagher hit on his fifth straight upset pick (underdogs of at least 7 points), with yet another double-digit underdog pulling through, as he continues to expand his lead on his

Masin-Moyer: Imagining the 2020 presidential field as NFL teams

Lucas Masin-Moyer | Wednesday, March 27, 2019

At the beginning of my second semester of sophomore year, former sports writer Daniel O’Boyle penned his magnum opus in a column imagining each contestant on that season’s edition of “The Bachelor” as an NBA team. So, in my retirement, and having run out of ideas, I’m going to rehash this idea with a few twists.

C.J. Prosise drafted No. 90 overall by Seattle Seahawks in 2016 NFL Draft

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, April 29, 2016

Former Irish running back C.J. Prosise was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks with the 90th-overall pick — the 27th pick of the third round — in the 2016 NFL Draft on Friday night. Prosise, who led the Irish with 1,032 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns this past season, was the sixth former Notre Dame player

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
