The beauty of self-care

Isabelle Kause | Monday, February 20, 2023

So much of our lives is spent doing things that don’t allow us to always take proper time for ourselves. As college students, we worry so much about our futures— securing internships, studying for law school or medical school, lining up post-graduation jobs and so much more. Aside from thinking about the future, much of

Book Nook: ‘Witchcraft’ as self-care

Caitlin Brannigan | Wednesday, October 12, 2022

To set the mood for Halloween, I read Patti Wigington’s “Witchcraft for Healing: Radical Self-care for your Mind, Body, and Spirit.” I have no experience with witchcraft and didn’t know what to expect. I failed to connect well with the spookier aspects of the book, but its emphasis on self-care resonated with me. Its focus

Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping

Mikey Colgan | Tuesday, April 12, 2022

When patients need a kidney transplant, they will have to complete five to seven eight-hour dialysis sessions per week until they are up for a transplant. If a patient is then fortunate enough to receive a kidney, the person then has to hope that the body will not reject the kidney. In order to combat

I see you. I am you.

Bella Laufenberg | Monday, April 11, 2022

Hi. My name is Bella, and I would like to tell you my story. A story of resilience, like many of us have, and imperfection. A story without a happy ending, but a hopeful one. Before I begin, I wanted to tell you that there is so much more to the story than I have

Movies to cry to

Allison Thornton | Tuesday, February 1, 2022

When you cry because a movie hits different, it’s not like your typical “mid-semester breakdown” cry; it’s a good cry. For example, recently, I watched the animated film “Encanto” not knowing what to expect. I went into the movie with little knowledge about the plot. But boy, I did not realize that I would be

Open letter: Looking through the mirror

Letter to the Editor | Friday, January 21, 2022

Speaking from a retrospective point of view, last semester was certainly a unique blend of everything that had been missing over the past two years. The dining halls bustled with laughter and commotion, and intensely long wait lines became the norm for the evenings. Tailgating made its return during football season, and performance halls opened

On smoke breaks and sleeping in: when does self-care become self-destructive?

Alexa Schlaerth | Friday, November 19, 2021

There is a central focus in a lot of leisure literature these days: how do we recreate? Especially post-pandemic, as this landscape changes, we have all borne witness to the trend of “self-care.” Face masks & skincare, smoothies and baking bread, staying in and watching Tiktoks–you name it. As college students today, we are inundated

What the doctor ordered

Alexa Schlaerth | Friday, September 10, 2021

I’m a bit of a hypochondriac. I’ve been accused of faking illness for pity or a break or even attention. I had been in some situations where going into the doctor led to no diagnosis at all. Sometimes aches and pains would come and go for no particular reason. There was no instruction packet sent

How to go into quarantine eight times — and make it out in one piece

Letter to the Editor | Monday, May 3, 2021

I have written three different versions of this piece. All three were written in what I thought at the time was my last stay in quarantine. Now, I can say confidently this is my last time in quarantine (because I actually have COVID). In this piece, which I have put more effort into than any

Keep growing

Sydni Brooks | Tuesday, April 6, 2021

During one of my several hourlong school breaks watching TikTok videos, I managed to end up on the self-love and emotional healing side of TikTok. Most of these topics included people growing after relationship breakups, recovering from addiction or abuse, or learning different mechanisms to deal with harmful behaviors. Many of these videos displayed people

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
