Lessons on love at Notre Dame

Christina Sayut | Friday, September 29, 2023

I am the kind of person who tries to find love in the tiniest places. Sure, it’s easy to find love in the hug of a friend or in the words “I love you.” But I think it’s much more meaningful to look for it in places you don’t always expect it. As a sad

Quotes I know that occupy a special place

Andrew McGuinness | Wednesday, September 13, 2023

There are a lot of things that come up during the three eight to 10-hour sequences a week when The Observer produces a new paper. There are even more ways to remember them, from the old papers hanging around our office to stories I’ve heard from writers past and present. One of the ways our

Dedication and focus: Foskey celebrates culture, learning to lead

Mannion McGinley | Friday, November 18, 2022

At the close of the 2021 season, defensive end Isaiah Foskey opted to return to Notre Dame rather than head to the NFL. In January, Foskey gave several reasons why he intended to stay.  “I believe in Coach Freeman and I just believe in the whole team that we can actually win a national championship,”

Looking four-ward

Eva Analitis | Friday, February 18, 2022

Second-semester seniors are pretty uniquely situated compared to the rest of the student body. Having successfully survived seven semesters of college courses, we are hardly daunted by an eighth. There’s a confident ease about us as we spend our remaining undergraduate days ambling around the quads and along the lakes, roaming the halls of the

Directions to the dome

Gabriel Niforatos | Friday, April 16, 2021

I remember my first day of class at the University of Notre Dame vividly. I stood swaying in the blustery wasteland at the intersection of Debart and Fitzpatrick, clutching a note card in my hand with information on my classes and their starting times scribbled frenziedly. I was five minutes late, and despite numerous Google

The beauty of embracing life’s uncertainties

Margaret Hynds | Friday, May 19, 2017

Most of my life gets planned out on yellow legal pads. I find comfort in plans, to-do lists and spreadsheets, and have been known to get physically uncomfortable when I don’t know what’s coming. So, no; I was not expecting this week to go very well for me I feel as though I’m in limbo

Notre Dame in Google folders

Emily McConville | Friday, May 19, 2017

Before my Notre Dame Google account goes away this summer, I need to do some file transfers. At the top of my to-do list is saving my Google Drive. My files are organized by semester, and they are essentially my academic life. Here are some of the ones I’ll save: Semester one: Short essays for

Not-so minor miracles

Zach Klonsinski | Friday, May 19, 2017

11:45 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015. That was the moment that forever changed how I viewed the work done in the basement of South Dining Hall by the wonderful people who work for The Observer. It started with a simple statement: “People are saying Fr. Ted died on Twitter.” I don’t remember who exactly said

To tell the truth, this could be the last time: Scene-ior Selections

John Darr, Erin McAuliffe, Jack Riedy, Kelly McGarry and Jimmy Kemper | Wednesday, May 3, 2017

No matter what the denizens of Scene past will tell you, the class of 2017 is a special one. Notoriously banned for writing music reviews during their freshman year in an attempt to publish articles on someone besides Kanye West, this year’s Scene-iors are perhaps the most in-tune in the section’s history. They can be

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
