The importance of comprehensive sex education

Grace Sullivan | Monday, November 21, 2022

The topic of sex tends to be taboo due to the deep embedment of abstinence over education in society. Although sex education classes can be awkward and uncomfortable, these tough conversations are worth having in order to begin normalizing and destigmatizing discussions about sex. From the Archives: A history of sex education at Saint Mary’s

Crystal Ramirez | Wednesday, November 3, 2021

On Monday, March 29, 1968 — two years since the first publication of The Observer — Vol. 11 No. LIX was published. Under the bold Scooby Doo-style letters that read “The Observer,” in between two bold back lines was the volume number, the date and “University of Notre Dame.”  Three days later on Monday, April

‘Sex Education’ season two: more stories, less luster

Olivia Burke | Thursday, January 23, 2020

The first season of Netflix’s “Sex Education” was a revelation. It was filled to the brim with interesting characters who subverted stereotypes. Its premise — an unlikely duo of high school outcasts team up to give sex advice to their classmates — was just weird enough without being too weird. It presented an image of

‘Sex Education:’ Bildungsroman for a sex-positive generation

Nora McGreevy | Tuesday, March 19, 2019

Otis Milburn, the high school-aged protagonist of the new British Netflix series “Sex Education,” dreads having new friends over to his house. It’s hard to blame the kid. His mother, Dr. Jean Milburn, Ph.D., is a sex therapist, and the Milburn home bears the evidence of her profession: sculptures and paintings of larger-than-life sexual organs, instructional videotapes

‘Big Mouth’ succeeds in a sweet, shameful second season

Nicholas Ottone | Tuesday, October 23, 2018

At first glance, “Big Mouth” seems like a sex comedy merely centered on the disgusting trials of puberty. But then, the late Charles Bradley’s “Changes” plays over images of the series’ cartoon heroes as they biologically shift from childhood to awkward adolescence. Melancholy and sensitive, “Changes” and the accompanying title sequence capture the winning spirit

Well, here is one for you: according to multiple recent studies, the University of Notre Dame is ranked among the top 10 least sexually healthy universities in the country. When it comes

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
