Notre Dame makes statement in rout of No. 12 Louisville

Elizabeth Greason | Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Something clicked for the Irish on Monday night. No. 7 Notre Dame (22-3, 10-1 ACC) took down ACC rival Louisville, 85-66, after turning on the heat offensively in what Irish head coach Muffet McGraw said was a stellar second quarter. After a slow start in which the No. 12 Cardinals (20-6, 7-4 ACC) jumped out

Loyd selected first by Seattle Storm in WNBA Draft

Greg Hadley | Friday, April 17, 2015

One last time, Jewell Loyd made Notre Dame history, one year earlier than expected. When Loyd’s name was called by the Seattle Storm in the WNBA Draft at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, on Thursday, she became the first No. 1 pick in program history. She also became the first player from the Irish to ever leave for

Waking the Echoes: Ivey ‘blessed’ to mentor new guards

Mary Green | Tuesday, January 27, 2015

Ask Niele Ivey about anything — her time as point guard under Irish coach Muffet McGraw, her current role as Irish women’s basketball recruiting coordinator and assistant coach or her 12-year-old son, Jaden — and one word will keep coming up. “Blessed.” It’s difficult to become an All-American and groom players like former Irish guard and

Hadley: Carrying on a legacy

Greg Hadley | Tuesday, November 4, 2014

The end game for Irish coach Muffet McGraw and Notre Dame is still the same. Nothing’s changed when it comes to how far she thinks her team can go. “We’re competing for a national championship,” McGraw said at the team’s media day Oct. 8. “That’s our main goal.” Things couldn’t get much different for the

Season Recap: ND advances to Final Four again

Mary Green | Friday, May 16, 2014

At the start of the season in November, the question on everyone’s mind was: How will Notre Dame transition to its new era in the ACC, especially without All-American guard Skylar Diggins? The Irish seemed to have found their answer, running the table to win the ACC regular season and tournament championships and extending their

Outstanding Senior Female Athlete: Kayla McBride

Greg Hadley | Friday, May 16, 2014

Kayla McBride was not always an All-American. The 5-foot-11 guard from Erie, Pa., came to Notre Dame as a four-star recruit and high school star but with little fanfare compared to the hoopla surrounding the arrival of superstar Skylar Diggins just a year earlier. In her freshman season, McBride spent half the year riding the

McBride, Achonwa both selected in top 10

Observer Sports Staff | Monday, April 14, 2014

Two former Notre Dame stars had a short wait before they heard their names called Monday night, as Kayla McBride and Natalie Achonwa were both among the top 10 players selected in the WNBA Draft, held in Uncasville, Conn. McBride, an All-American guard and national player of the year candidate, was taken with the third

Irish roll to Nashville, now must replace Achonwa

Samantha Zuba | Thursday, April 3, 2014

Some might have hoped, but few predicted the 2013-2014 Irish would achieve so much. If the loss of Skylar Diggins didn’t do the team in, then the move to the high-powered ACC would. But Notre Dame (36-0, 16-0 ACC) plowed through a perfect season and then charged through the NCAA tournament bracket all the way

Irish earn Elite status

Greg Hadley | Sunday, March 30, 2014

It just would not be the Sweet 16 without Skylar Diggins. It does not matter that the superstar guard has not played in a Notre Dame uniform for almost a year. When her team returned to South Bend for the NCAA Regional semifinals ¾ and make no mistake, the top-seeded Irish are still very much

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
