The funk is necessary

Kate Casper | Tuesday, October 11, 2022

I knew I was in a funk when I took myself on a lake walk last Saturday. While the cause was unclear at the time, I knew for sure my funk was triggered by something. Specifically, I knew it was triggered by my self-imposed “Snapchat Detox”: I would allow myself only 15 minutes of Snapchat

This ugly mug

Aidan O'Malley | Friday, April 9, 2021

Remember the first time you wore a mask? As we “celebrate” the pandemic’s first anniversary, my Snapchat memories have made a painful point of reminding me of countless other milestones. “One year ago, today,” Notre Dame canceled in-person classes. “One year ago, today,” movie theaters shuttered. And “one year ago, today,” I wore a mask

Start a streak with democracy: Snapchat in the newsroom

Christopher Parker | Tuesday, September 24, 2019

Of all the social media apps that mystify my mother, I’d say Snapchat is the most foreign to her. As a form of communication, it truly makes no sense. If I had a dollar for every time somebody answered a question over Snapchat when I’d totally forgotten the question itself… well, I’d still be in

My Snapchat story

Julianna Conley | Friday, November 9, 2018

A list of things I am not proud of: When I was five years old, I got distracted during church and carved my name into the pew with my cross. As the only “Julianna” in the Orange County Greek Orthodox community, there was no question who the vandal in question was. During Welcome Weekend, I

‘Eighth Grade’ profoundly comforting, heartbreaking

Nora McGreevy | Monday, September 3, 2018

Eighth grade is the worst. Take the birthday pool party, for instance. For the introverted, self-conscious kid with anxiety, a pool party is a minefield of potential trauma. Social interaction without the comfortable confines of the classroom, gift-giving, navigating conversations with your cliquey peers — and all in swimsuits, no less. “Eighth Grade,” directed by Bo

Snap cashing out

Edward Griesedieck | Friday, February 23, 2018

As many of you know, Snapchat recently did a major overhaul of its platform. This isn’t uncommon in the world of social media. Instagram has had many iterations, and Snapchat has changed over the past years to progress forward. Every time Snapchat comes out with a new update, there are people who complain. Change is

At least for now

Adam Ramos | Monday, September 19, 2016

I have this fantasy of waking up with a flip phone on my nightstand. Not that I would ever act on this fantasy, but it still makes me smile to think about reclaiming my old Motorola Razr from antiquity. Unfortunately, the reality is I’d be a mess without the abundance of resources afforded to me

What does your typical Instagram caption look like? Is it song lyrics? An inspirational quote? How about a multi-paragraph account of your most personal life experiences? If you’re Caroline Calloway — Cambridge grad and full-time author — you probably picked the last one. Calloway’s story started in New York with the Hudson Instagram filter and a

Snapchat: get over your self(ie)

Miko Malabute | Wednesday, September 16, 2015

Over the past couple of days, one would be hard-pressed to not notice the new update that Snapchat recently rolled out. Across everyone’s feed, people watched themselves vomiting rainbows while their eyes popped out to unhealthy proportions. With every release of something “new,” there’s bound to be an initially strong response, even if it’s not necessarily

Start talking for real

Alex Carson | Thursday, September 10, 2015

Let’s talk about the Internet. It’s a beautiful, incredibly powerful thing we have at our disposal. And while our ability to check news at the twitch of a couple fingers is a pretty neat thing, it’s probably not the most important thing we do on the “World Wide Web.” No, that distinction probably should be

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
