A portrait of snow

Gabriel Niforatos | Tuesday, November 13, 2018

Snow has always been a bit of a spectacle to me. I am from the desert, and there are years and winters when there is no snow entirely. In fact, the first time I bought a winter coat was over winter break during my freshman year. I can remember waking up when I was younger

It’s finally fall

Nicole Simon | Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Fall has officially — and finally — arrived. I’d venture to say most would agree with the former part of that statement, though perhaps not the latter. As we get further and further into the school year, a few more leaves fall to the ground and the temperature drops a little more each day, calling

Landscape services attempt to keep grounds clean after serious snowfall

Claire Kramer | Monday, February 19, 2018

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night can stop this crew; in fact, they’re the ones battling it. Notre Dame’s Landscape Services team, known for clear sidewalks in the midst of heavy South Bend snowfall, may have met its match Feb. 9. According to the National Weather Service, 11 inches of snow

You get the idea. “Curling” — Speedy Ortiz By Adam Ramos, Scene Editor Unlike its summer counterpart, the

Angus & Julia Stone repeat and clash on “Snow”

Grace Weissend | Thursday, September 21, 2017

If Angus & Julia Stone released anything on their new album “Snow,” it was an identity crisis. The newly released album, from the Australian sibling duo that created a lasting hit with their 2010 track “Big Jet Plane,” has significantly less bright spots and “hits” than it was expected to have. The album cover is

University remains open after record snowfall

Rachel O'Grady and Lesley Stevenson | Monday, February 2, 2015

From Saturday night into Monday morning, the South Bend area accumulated record-setting amounts of snow, but the University of Notre Dame remained open. “As fun as it would be to have the day off, that’s not why we’re here. As long as it is safe for the teachers and students to go to class that’s what

Weather causes game-weekend cancellations

Lesley Stevenson | Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Football activities and gameday staff encountered unusual challenges last weekend after “unprecedented” amounts of snow and harsh winds overtook campus, according to Mike Seamon, associate vice president for campus safety. “The snow and the cold played big factors in the weekend’s activities around the game,” Seamon said. “To everyone’s knowledge, we cannot remember a time

Don’t dread snow

Caelin Miltko | Friday, November 14, 2014

When I woke up Thursday morning, I was greeted with what I thought was the rather unfortunate appearance of several inches of snow. I’d been warned at the beginning of the week about its imminent presence but I still hadn’t quite prepared myself for the reality. Like many other Notre Dame students, I was immediately

A college snow day

Annemarie Loessberg | Tuesday, January 28, 2014

I am from the East Coast, just outside of Washington, D.C. While I was in high school, we were hit by two very large storms christened “Snowpocalypse” and “Snowmageddon.” If there is about an inch of snow on the ground, the government closes, and schools closely follow suit. While I was in high school, we

The colder side of global warming

Christian Nofziger | Thursday, January 16, 2014

Fellow Tree Huggers, Let me begin by welcoming you all back to campus! Things got pretty crazy for the students who stayed in the Midwest this winter, and I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable break. For those of you who live either under a rock or spend all of your time on the

When the 2017 “Wonder Woman” film was released When the 2017 “Wonder Woman” film was released, many found the film exceptional, filled with female empowerment and inclusivity of women in Hollywood. It made me wonder if they saw the same movie I had watched, where a strong independent woman suddenly meets a man and willingly follows his every order, even though she’s a grade A baddie all on her own.

ICYMI: Saint Mary’s to require COVID-19 vaccinat ICYMI: Saint Mary’s to require COVID-19 vaccination for student enrollment in 2021-2022 academic year

College President Katie Conboy announced in a Monday email that all students are required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for the upcoming academic year. The vaccine will be added to the list of mandatory student immunizations beginning in the 2021-2022 term.

“There is so much yet to learn about the COVID-19 virus, and while we are encouraged by the progress made thus far, we still see areas for concern; in particular the variant strains and what they could bring,” Conboy said. “For this reason, among others, we are making the bold choice to mandate student vaccines.”

According to Conboy, the College will offer exemption to the vaccine policy for proper medical and religious reasons.

In the wake of the University’s announcement of In the wake of the University’s announcement of Zahm House’s disbandment, The Observer began an investigation into the dorm’s so-called “troubling culture.”

The investigation revealed several incidents contributing to the administration’s decision, including Zahm residents’ disregard for and plans to alter COVID-19 tests as well as vandalism within and beyond the walls of the hall.

The Observer also obtained a series of email chains sent between roughly 200 Zahm residents from 2019-2020, in which students shared graphic and misogynistic jokes regarding sex and sexual assault.

Read more about COVID-19 cases and plans to alter results, annual vandalism costs, the disputed culture of the dorm, the Zahm residents’ take on the dorm’s closure and what the final decision means for Notre Dame residential life on The Observer’s website.
